Dear Sri NVS swAmin,

Thanks for your response about astrology. I hope more people are

able to see the true situation as you have described.

Turning to a different topic, in another thread there was mention

of theetu and performance of punyahavachanam. I have recently come

across different types of punyaahavachanam. What is the difference

between the terms " punyaahavachanam " , " svasti punyaahavachanam " ,

" bodhayana punyaahavachanam " ?

What basic steps are involved in punyaahavachanam? I have heard

it involves doing avahanam of varuNan in a kumbham and then reciting

mantras and doing prokShaNam of items, the house, etc. but do not know

any more details. Does the procedure vary between Rig, Yajur and

Saama Vedis?

thanks for your advice,

I had given the complete and step by step manthrams and actions to be done for a

Punyahavaachanam. You have also given the correct steps in your message itself.

Punyahams are common for all vedhams except the reciting of vedha portion. There

is no svasti punyaham but it may be spelled as 'sudhdhi' punyaham. Punyaham is a

part of almost all vaideeka karma.

Dear swAmin,

The link for puNyaaham below does not seem to be working. I

checked also with the sathyanarayana pooja link, which is also not

working (but was working a few days ago). There must be problems with

the server again, perhaps.

Dear Sri NVS swAmin,

I just forgot that I had another question about punyaaham. You

mentioned that the vedam portion differs between different shaakhas. I

understand for yajurvedis it is pavamana suktam; can I ask which

section is recited for samavedis during punyaham?

thanks and praNAmams,

There is no specific name in Sama Vedham particularly for punyaha samams. They

were selected from different places and arranged as punyaha samamams.

But I check it out with some other sama authorities and inform later if my

answer differs.

Dear swAmin,

(forgot to ask this question in my previous message)

Also I was wondering if the html file for punyaham is available

now. Now the link you provided works but it goes to the index page

for various karmas, not the punyaham page itself.

Sri:

Srimate Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha

Dear Sri Rajan:

The sAman-s recited by sAma-vedin-s

(kauthuma shAkhA) as part of the puNyAhavAchanam are:

kumbha-pratiShThA:

1. The two brahmA sAman-s, also known as the two R^ita sAman-s

(brahma jaGYAnaM...iti)

2. nAnadam sAman (pratyasmai...iti)

3. The two sAntanike sAmans (bhago na chitra...iti)

puNyAhavAchana-japam:

1. tarantasya sAman

2. The 2 shuddhAshuddhIye sAman-s (etonindra...iti)

3. the bArhaspatyam (somA-rAjAnam-varuNam...iti)

4. indrasyAbhayaN^karam (yatAindrabhayamahe tato naH...iti)

5. again, the two brahmA sAman-s,

(brahma jaGYAnaM...iti)

6. the two arka-puShpam sAman-s

(pavitram te vitatam brahmahaNaspate...iti)

7. vAmadevyam (kayA aschitra...iti)

As Sri NVS Swamy has rightly pointed out, the sAman-s have

been chosen from different sections of the Sama Vedam.

Hope this helps.

namo vedapuruShAya!

ramanuja dasan.

Dear Sri Shreyas swAmin,

Thanks for your kind help.

Can I clarify, that the brahma saamams start as you have written

" brahma brAhma jaGYAnam prathamam... " and ends " satAH...chayo nima

satascha vaayi vaah o... i Da " . Is there another one which I've

missed out?

Sri VAsu vaadhyaar swAmin, perhaps I was being confusing in my

previous question, can I enquire if you have the original HTML file

for punyaaham which you said was on the website, as the one one the

website doesn't seem to be working. If you do have it, would it be

possible for you to send it to my email address? Only if you have it

available and it is not any inconvenience for you.

regards,

praNAmams

Dear Mr.Ranjan,

Our website is now working perfectly.

There will be no problem here after, because we have changed the contents to a

world class (.net 2.0) server by paying the actual cost.

(This is to clarify that nobody should think that we are running the website in

a FREE server. And to stress the future reliability.)

http://www.ahobilam.com/tamil/vaideekam/poorvam/PUNYAHAM.HTM

http://www.ahobilam.com/tamil/vaideekam/poorvam/

http://www.ahobilam.com/tamil/vaideekam/

http://www.ahobilam.com/tamil/

http://www.ahobilam.com/

anything will work.

Only thing I have to rearrange the links and contents to make it readable and

remove the errors in the contents. I can start doing this from the second week

of May -07 I hope.

Dear Sri Shreyas swAmin,

Thanks very much for those. Indeed they are a beautifully

typeset saamams - I would be grateful to know where you are able to

obtain such saama veda documents, and where you were fortunate to

undergo saamaveda adhyayanam?

A general question regarding puNyaaham: Sri VAsu VAdhyAr swAmin,

the link is working fine now, many thanks for checking. You mention

in the Tamil procedure text that the veda manthrams (paavamaana

suuktam etc.) should be chanted after doing proper adhyayanam

(learning it from somebody in person). If we do not know these

suuktams, what is the best thing to do: should we just omit these

mantras (i.e. just do from " dadhikraaviNNo ... aapo janayathaachanaha "

or is it better not to perform the function ourselves and try to find

someone else to do it?

One other question: there is a section before starting puNyaaham

which starts " om shaantir astu, tushtir astu, pushtir astu... " - are

these veda mantrams or shlokams and do they have swarams, should they

also be learned from a teacher or can they be chanted from a text?

thanks and praNAmams,

namO nArAyaNAya,

Ranjan

***

Second part of your question :-

" Om shandhi:, thusti:, pushti:, rudhdhi:, avignam, aayushyam, aarogyam .... "

there are many Anugna questiones which should be asked towards the swmins who

are there to participate in that japam, they will reply all the questions ending

with " Asthu " .

They are not the part of vedham, they can be treated as prayogam (not slogam).

But it can be used to keep it in practice, otherwise there is no meaning of

telling this without a single swamy in front of you to reply this?!

First part reciting vedha mandhram without adhyayanam is restricted.

But without the 'Punya Japam' i.e, without vedha manthram there is no meaning of

doing punyaham.

As a brahmin all should know at least some small portions of vedha manthram to

chant.

This is my main aim of starting this group. I am asking every member while

joining the group about learning manthrams in a particular time as a online

class.

I hope, one day or other it will be possible to start an online vaideeka /

prayoga class.

Then there will be number of medium level vadhyars through out the world.

This will be my life's achievement.

Now there are more than 640 members in our group. Next year the strength will be

go double I hope. I will be free from this May 2007 from few of my duties.

So, I hope this is the time to start the online class.

I need some facility to have online / live communication with a group of people

through web cam and internet.

That is the problem still.

It is better to record the manthram in a cd or tape recorder and play it where

you do not find a swamy who did proper adhyayanam. Vadhyars will not accept it,

because they think it will affect their income. But I don't think. If we allow

to do it, the number of user become large and vaideekas will get more income.

We will discuss later in detail.

regards,

Vasu Vadyar Swamin, Your idea in helping the our community is very well taken. The members support on any account will be available and I wish you start downloading different mantras for recital. Even now many members are doing Tharpanam etc on their own and due to scarcity of Vadyars as well the working pressure. However some areas require Vadyars which is enevitable. The main purpose is to think of Lord Naryana who only can save us and take us to Moksham. adiyen, nochalur seshadri sampath.
