Respected Moderator,

Yes, I vote for posting Dharma Shastram.

I have a doubt and may be this is a silly question too ! Can you please cleary

define what is

" Shastram " and what is " Vaideekam " ?

Dasan

K. Vasudevan

***Adiyen,

You are coorect, but I am the unknown person who wrongly named it.

Vaideekam means which 'Madham' that accepts The Vedham as a superior " Pramanam "

that madham is called 'Vaideeka Madham' and persons who belongs to that madham

is called 'vaideekas' and the things (ritulas) done by them are called

'Vaideekam'.

Actually I could have named it as " Rituals " . But usually we do not use that

words rituals for karmas. Generally we call all Poorva Karmas and Apara Karmas

in the name of " Vaideekam " .

(I think that your question made me to start the introduction of " Dharma

Sastram " )

Sastram is entirely different from vaideekam.

Sastrams are common for all persons of Chathur Varnam.

Braham, Vaisya, Kshthrya, Soothra are the four varnams.

Who are not come in this category are called 'Panchamas'

For an example: Sastram says as a rule that Brahmanan should do Upakarma in the

month of " Avani " and in Powrnami.

i.e : Sastram will say only who shoul do a karma and when it should be done,

where it should be done, what is the punishment if one skipped it. But it will

not tell the details for the question How?

Some rushis made suthrams to do the karmas instructed by sastram.

Aapasthambar wrote suthram for Yajur vedham

Bhodhayanar also wrote suthram for yajur vedham

Aswalayanar wrote suthram for Rig vedham

Dhrahyayanar wrote suthram for Sama Vedham

and some unfamiliar suthrams are there.

All vaideeka karmas should be done with those suthrams of rushis by the

followers of that rushi.

According to that suthrams then detailed books had been written which are called

'Prayogams' or 'Vaideeka Prayogams'

'Prayoga chandrika', 'Prayoga Kusumavali' etc. are some names of the famous

prayoga books.

Expert vaideekas will read all thos prayogams and teach their clients according

to that.

Most of the vadhayars were became bruhaspathy only by experience, they don't

know which terms are extracted from which prayogams. They will simply tell that

" My vadhayr tought me this much " .

So this is called vaideekam

We will later discuss some more details.

Respected Moderator,

Thank you very much for clearing my doubts on the difference between shastram and Vaideekam. I think I will understand it better as I go along with the group and interact

with them.

My question stemmed from the reason that you insisted the questions we ask should relate

to Vaideekam and not Shastram. I was not sure about the difference !

Moderator,

My vote : 2. No Do not start it.

As rightly mentioned by you, in the current scenerio it is very difficult to follow the dharma sastram especially for the people living abroad (even for localites). Also as rightly said, we should not do anything against sastram knowing it very well.

However, if we have any specific question on any vaidheeka/sastrams, we can get it clarified with our respected vadhyar who is always open to answer any kind of questions in any form.

Sorry for not getting back earlier. I have two considerations:

(a) My own learning

(b) Preserving the culture which we owe to our next generation and we

need to hand that over.

On (a), of course there are and can be compromises and I tend to hide

behind the saying 'ignorance is a bliss'. And practical considerations

also make following things difficult.

However on (b), I am wondering how the hand over would take place

unless the knowledge is distributed. Fortunately with the power of

internet, we do not have the problem of access to information and hence

assuming some great souls like people running Vaideekam record things,

they become available in future. And as for our reading them and

following them -- well, we will leave it to our Lord Narayana - if he

destines us to read them, how can we escape it?

Respected Vadyar,

About ur opinion,I do agree with u,knowing a sasthram and not following it still

more sinful.Of course may not be able to able to follow many, taking into a/c

the circumstances and ur mode of social life. But the thing is that if only u

know things then only if time and circumstances permit u may be able to

follow. Therefore knowledge of sasthram is imminent to follow. Now the fact is

that the present generation lacks the basic knowledge.Let me tell u my

expereince. My father taught us clearly Sandya vandanam telling us that u need

not do this, but when u r aged u may think of doing ,then u should know that, then

only u can perform.I did not perform, when i was studying in college. But I am now

in Duabi, everday i perform it before i start the busy day, as i know that.Hence

knowledge of sasthram is important to preserve the cultural tradtions is my

opinion.Again I do believe Mantra Pushpam is chanted in many a end of functions

to keep the spirit of Vedas and to hand over to the

progeny.Vadyar ,Is it not the sense of that?.Hence please start sasthram

writing on line step by step- Hare krishna -Raman.

Fine Mr.Ravindran,

But here we are (who are polled against) not only fearing of the sin doubling

but about the unnecessary discussion about the lines in sastram.

Namaskaram to All,

I am a new member of this group.I would like to share my views on this subject.

Dharma Shastras allow us lot of flexibility to correct our thoughts and actions.

This may be possible in this janma or subsequent janmas. Time is not a

constraint. We do not follow rituals to satisfy others or the religious heads as

is the case in Islam, Sikhism etc. where people are ostracised from the sect for

not practising their commands.Ours is more of a self enquiry and search of atman

within ourself. Sandhya vandanam, Chanting Rudram etc. is the basic step in this

direction. Moving forward to beeja mantras etc. is the advanced step. There is

nothing like commiting a sin by not doing rituals. Parmatman will always bestow

good things to the extent we deserve. By not doing rituals we may at best not be

able to reap the benefits which otherwise we would have got by doing them. Let

us all endeavour to try and practise our age old traditions without fear. It is

all for self development.

Here if possible, I would like to suggest that we can share mantras and other

day to day routine in Sanskrit also as our children need to have knowledge of

Devnagari lipi. Sanskrit being the mother of all languages should be taught to

our children.
