THE MANI-PRAVALAM STYLE

The ManiprAvaLa style of commentary is unique to our commentaries. Proficient, in both sanskrit and tamil, our pUrvAchAryas deemed it best to coin the words in both the languages freely mixing the same. This gave the listeners/readers teremondous experience. The sentences were not just tamil or merely sanskrit, they were both resulting in a unique langauge -the maNi-p-pravALam.

From NampiLLai EDu avathArikai for TiruvAimozhii Mudhal SriyappadhipI- mAHA PravEsam

"SriyappadhiyAi avApth samastha kAmanAi samastha kalyANa guNAthmaganAna sarvesvaran,

'adiyai adaindhu vuLLam thEARi ERil inbathiruveLLam yAn mUgzhinan enRu..'

It may be noted that the first line is samskritham, second tamil, third and fourth line mixed.

From PeriyavAchAn piLLai ThirunedunthANdakam avathArikai:

The first line is tamil and then it is again mixed.

The pleasure of going through this style cannot be conveyed as it is. It is to be read, realised, enjoyed and cherished.
