Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

All are aware that aaNdaal called all young women folk, 'hey girls,

come let us do congregate and enjoy the lord krishNa – 'koodi yirundhu

kuLirndhu' krishNa bhajanam - a principle in line with the gOpees of krishNa's period.

In the same traditional line, here is one staunch raama bhaktha calling all of

us to do raama pradhakshiNam - enjoy raama by going around him – see his krithi

'lakshhaNamulu gala' – in

raagam: sudda saavEri, thaaLam: aadhi

29 dheera shankaraabharaNam janya

Telugu

pallavi

lakshaNamulu gala sree raamuniki

pradhakshiNa monarinthumu raarE [lakshaNamulu]

meaning: Come, let us perform circumambulation of lord

sree raama – who is endowed with divine and auspicious form and qualities.

anupallavi

kukshiNi brahmaaNDamu lunnavaTa

vi-chakshuNuDaTa dheeksha guruDaTa subha

[lakshaNamulu]

meaning: It is

heard [from Vedhaas, and or itihaasams, etc.] that –

there are many universes in His stomach; He is a connoisseur or discriminating or

differentiates between things; He is the preceptor who initiates his

devotees.

Note: Here, the last word 'Subha' goes with

starting word of the krithi 'lakshaNamulu' and hence it is 'Subha lakshaNamulu'-

since this is anu pallavi.

The differentiation can mean many things,

differentiates between right and wrong, gives individual identities to each

jeeva, etc. etc.

sishabaDi sabhanu meppincu bhaktha

rakshakuDaunaTa saakshiyai velayu

thyaagaraaja pakshakuDaunaTa muppadhi

reNDu [lakshaNamulu]

meaning: It is

said that –

He shall be directly perceivable to

those well-versed in vEdhaas or sruthi, who know definitions and aim (of

mahaa vaakyams); He dwells in heart of devotees, and

shall be the protector of those devotees who, being erudite bring fame to

the assembly; He shall be perceivable in oneself only

to those who are dedicated to chanting names being established in the

imperishable brahman; He shall be always taking the side of

this thyaagaraaja.

Come, let us perform circumambulation of lord sree raama -

one who shines as a mere witness and endowed with the thirty-two auspicious

body marks (characteristics).

Points on this krithi and on the raagam selection:

1.

Raagam is sudhdhha saavEri – clean and clear saavEri – since

this krithi is linked to sreemadh raamaayaNam episode of sree hanumaan

describing all the subha lakshaNams of sree raama and his sudhdham – not thinking

about any other woman – and his pure qualities - to his consort sudhdha seethaa

– pathivrathaa seethaa – the seethaa the clean and pure.

2.

Another krithi by thyaagaraaja is there when hanumaan informs

raama 'kaNdEn seethaiyai' – that krithi 'jaanakee ramaNa' is in raagam 'sudhdha

seemanthini' the raagam itself says she is pure – unadulterated even though in

a kaamukan's place. So thyaagaraaja's raagam selection itself plays a very

important role and gives a clear lead.

3.

There are lot of clear and clean things indicating things to

come -

§

thrijata has already expressed her dream,

§

hanumaan expresses that the subha sakunam of the dawn

has come,

§

hanumaan has reached seethaa and identified her,

§

hanumaan conveys the message of raama's welfare, his

wait and anxieties for welfare of seethaa and all that

So it is all clear and clean signals

of 'subham' for seethaa, the saavEri – the ladylove of lord.

4.

For all times for hanumaan it is raama smaraNam – so even

while describing his raama's subha lakshaNams to seethaa, hanumaan says 'let us

do pradhakshiNam and sing about his auspicious form'.

5.

In any sthOthram like 'sree vishNu sahasra naamam SVSN', what

we do by way of sthOthram - is to list out mainly the following three --

a.

his names - naamam

b.

his physical attributes – description about the physical

features

c.

his qualitative attributes and deeds – vivid description of

guNam and his actions in saving his bhakthaas – which again is his gunam

Many examples

can be given from SVSN

a.

on names – vishNu, kEsava, krishNa, vaasudhEva, naaraayaNa,

achyutha, gOvindha, anantha, vaamana,

b.

on physical attributes – hEma anga, suvarNa varNa, chathur

dhamshtra, chathur bhuja, lohitha aksha,

c.

vrusha priya, amitha vikarama, ugra, kruth jnaaya etc.

[this is only

sample].

In same way

thyaagaraaja also wants to sing on his ishta dheivam raama's lakshaNams – 32 in

number – as per chaamudhrika lakshNa saasthram 32 aspects make a perfect male –

which vaalmeeki lists out.

Those aspects we

will see in next post.
