Dear all:

I have a humble request. My grandfathers younger sister passed away. My father

has taken the responsibility to do the 13 days and then subsequently the Onnai

Masyam and others.

He has now been advised that he should not be doing this, first as her gothram

is separate from ours. That he is still doing the yearly Shardham for my

grandfather.

My great aunt had no children, therefore my father decided to undertake the

duties.

We have been informed by some that this is wrong and should not be done by my

father.

Please advise what should be done or not be done. By doing something we don't

want to displease the spirits or make things worse.

As I am ignorant of these issues I would ask everyones assistance.

Humbly

Ramesh Rangarajan

Dear Swamin,

If it pleases your father, let him do.

Other than some honorable way of disposing of the body, no other rite is required in the strict sense for anybody irrespective of how many children they have. Even if we were to assume that they are still required, nobody can do it as described in the apara karma anyhow. Because it is something not required, the only reason to do is for the satisfaction of the person doing. It is time that we attach minimal importance to these vestigial rites, even when we do it with most shraddha.

Dear SwaminsI am under the strong impression and belief that performing the last rites for the departed soul by his son is mandatory requirement and further cerfemonies in the end of the first year and every year thereafter are also the basic duty as framed in our religion and the practices/discipline. I am now confused over the observations of Mr KST. Will any one throw more light on this very important subject.adiyenSEVEL KRISHNAN IYENGAR

Dear Sriman Sadagopachar swamin, dasan,Yesterday I replied to a similar question, I am giving it here which will very well suitable for this question.I don't know both questions are came from the same person.*********************************************************E-mail::artemisltdQuestion::We are Vadakalai Iyengar, Kousika Gothram. My great aunt passed away on month ago. She was my grandfather's younger sister, my grandfather passed away in 1992 and my father performs all the necessary rites annually. My grandmother is still alive. My Atthai Patti had no children, her husband died sometime back.My father took over the funeral rites as the nearest relative did not want to perform them. What should be done for 27th Day, Mausyam, etc. Does anything have to be done for the full year? Some say doing these things will have a negative effect rather than positive. Please help.Ramesh RangarajanGreetings,First of all, good works never make bad effects. If there is no property to enjoy and perform the rituals, then you can do upto the year end (if Sapindikaranam done) and leave there after. If the Karma had been completed with "Narayana Bali" instead of Sapindikaranam you can leave it from right now.If there is some property then the enjoyer should continue the karma.regs, nvs**********************************************************************Power problem, Sorry for the delay.Dhanyosmi, nvs

Dear Swamin,

The answer is quite clear in the Bhagavad-Gita. Arjuna was preoccupied with these traditions (which terribly weakens our religion) and not Krishna. Arjuna was bound by tradition, Krishna taught him the truth. It is also clear that Arjuna did not understand the religion, because tradition had taken over the truth (see Bhagavd-Gita chapter 4 beginning part). Obviously nothing bad would happen by doing these rites. Only bad thing may be feeling bad as we can not do it properly. But nothing bad, would happen by not doing either. We are not even qualified to do it in the first place. I don't know a single person who is qualified, because hardly anyone does agni kaaryam on a daily basis. Because now it is almost impossible to do it properly, so no value even if there was anything to begin with. It is a shame that we have reduced our religion to shraaddham and tarpaNam. This is equivalent to Egyptians building Pyramids in 2009 for after life jorney! How much more weak a religion can be, if liberation is based on unbroken performance of these rites? How can anyone predict what a grand child would do? We need to introspect! Krishna clearly stated in BG 2:11 that Arjuna was a sincere fool. Which one would you choose between GaruDa puraNam (ever live in guilt) and Bhagavad-Gita (be liberated right here)?

--I am also having a similar question. A relative of mine has lost his eldest

daughter who is married and has a son. Her last rites were performed by her

husband - her son is hardly 4 years old. My friend would like to know whether

the Shradham of his parents i.e. father and mother could be performed by him

since one year has not elapsed since the death of his daughter. - My opinion is

that he should perform since the daughter has been married and the last rites

have also been performed by her hausband, my friend parents shradham has no link

to her death. I would however, like to know the exact position in the matter so

that I can advise my friend.
