What do you drink during the fast? I suggest that you drink plenty of warm/hot clean/purified water. Sip it often. It will stimulate Agni, and help your body burn up Ama. In preparation for the fast, i also suggest that you drink/sip hot water the day before the fast and eat light food. Observe your tongue also. That can be a good indicator of Ama in the digestive tract. Sipping hot water throughout the day until the tongue becomes clear of coating and discoloration is an excellent and simple way of clearing Ama from the digestive tract. Excess K give a white/pasty coating, excess P a yellow/green coating, and excess V is brown/black color. Normal tongue is pink. You might also want to eat Kitchari for a week or more along with the warm/hot water to clear out the body. Kitchari is a mixture of Basmati Rice and Mung Dal and is basic to Ayurvedic healing. It is a very balanced food, gives the body plenty of protein, and easy to digest. The spices can be altered for a particular constitution - V/P/K. Here is a recipes that is close to tridoshic but designed not to aggravate Pitta. The liver needs support during any fast as it can soon be overwhelmed with the release of toxins from the body. Drinking the likes of Milk Thistle tea, Bhringraj or Dandelion tea can be good. 1 cup of yellow mung dal - soak overnight 1 cup basmati rice 1 inch of fresh ginger, grated 2 tablespoons of coconut 1 handful of fresh cilantro leaves 2 tablespoons of ghee 1 piece of cinnamon bark 4-6 whole cardomon pods 2 bay leaves 1/2 teaspoon turmeric salt, approx 1/4 teaspoon 6 cups of water As in all cases, see your doctor for medical support and advice.
