Guest guest
Shri Brahmadaru Smarami Dear Anand, Sri Sri Chandi is a 700 shloka paean to the goddess also known as the Durga Shaptashati and Devi Mahatmya. It is found in the Markandeya Purana. These 700 shlokas discusses the emergence of Goddess Chandika and the tridha shakti MahaSaraswati, Mahakali and Mahalakshmi from the essential root energy of the Divine Feminine. In the Chandi the goddess assumes a variety of forms like Chamunda, Kali, Shivaduti and others in order to annihilate a string of demons: Chanda, Munda, Shumbha, Nishumbha, Madhu, Kaitabha, Dhumralochan, Raktabija, etc. The 700 shlokas not only narrates these tales but also contains four very powerful hymn to the Goddess: the Aparajita Devi Stuti, Shakradikrta Devi Stuti, Brahmadikrta Devi Stuti and the Narayani Stuti. It is said that one should read the Devi and Ratri Suktas along with it. The essential nature of the Divine Feminine can be understood and experienced through the Chandi. Apart from this, Chandi books when published, are appended with some extra shlokas like the Kilaka Stotra, Argala Stotra and a Durga Kavacha. The root mantra for the Chandi is said to be the Navarna mantra or the Chamunda Hrdaya Mantra. The Kali Kavacha is not part of the Chandi. All devas and devis have kavachas to their name. Kavacha means armour. A variety of mantras or a compote of mantras related to a particular deity is imputed in different parts of the body, so as to make a Mantra Armour which would protect the body from all evils. However, very often the harm is instilled through the mind. Many people afflicted by black magic often become schizophrenic and lose their minds. Doing a mantra protects both the body and the mind. Once can recite the kavacha but then you must chant the mantra as well. The very act of constant chanting creates a Mantra Armour. It evokes the presence of the deity who will come and protect you.
