Put those Sanskrit and jyotish tomes at her feet and ask for all the vidya. Guest guest
|om| Dear Sarbani, namaste In South India, we consider the day before Dassehra (ie., navami tithi in the navaratri period) as Saraswati Pooja Day. On that day, we put our books before Goddess Saraswati. Why today (Vasant Panchami) is considered as Saraswati Pooja day in North India? best regards Hari On 1/23/07, Sarbani Sarkar <sarbani wrote: sarasvatyai namo nityam bhadrakalyai namo namah vedavedangavedanta vidyasthaneva eva ca|| Dear budding students and aspiring jyotishis, Just to remind you that today is Saraswati Puja, also known as Sri Panchami or Vasant Panchami. Guest guest
Shri Brahmadaru Smarami Dear Hari, Saraswati is worshipped on Magha Shukla Panchami (also known as Sri Panchami) as directed by Narayana to Narada in the Devi Bhagavatam. Narayana says that this day should be treated as the commencement of learning and Saraswati should be worshipped holding a Veena and on a stack of books according to the Kanva Shakha of the Yajur Veda, and with appropriate kavacha, recitation of hymns, and mantra japa. On the 10 days of Ashvina Akalabodhan and the normal Bodhan of the Devi in spring, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of Mahishasuramardini, but really it is worship of the Adi Shakti Devi Bhagavati who emerged as Chamunda/Chandika for the demolition of evil. This Devi is the crystallised manifestation of the three forms of the Adi Shakti, namely Maha Lakshmi, Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati, the embodiments of the three gunas. This is as described in the Durga Saptashati, which is read during these days, and according to which these pujas are performed. The Saptashati hymns and dhyanas are divided into three segments dedicated to the three forms of the Devi. Panchami is ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter's shakti is Tara, one of whose form is Nila Saraswati. Of course, this Saraswati, who is worshipped as Vagdevi, Sarada, Bharati is sveta varna or white in colour and nowehre near being apparently aggressive like her darker, mahavidya form. But nevertheless Saraswati is a form of Tara as Sarada. I don't know about north India, but in East India she is worshipped on this day.
