Dear David et

al,

Namaste

There are 3 kinds

of gandanta:

Sripatai: Nakshatra the last 2 ghatikas

(48 minutes) of revathi, Aslesha

and Jyestha and each of the first two ghatikas of Asvini, Magha and Mula, where inausipiocus effects will follow birth, journeys,

marriage etc.

Narada: Tithi

gandanta: The last ghatika

(24 minutes) of the three poorna tithis which are on the 15th, 5th

and 10th tithis. The first one ghati of each of the three nanda

tithi which are the 1st, 6th and 11th tithis which are considered as the evil phases of the

Moon, where births, journeys, rituals falling in these will hasten

the demise of the concerned person.

Narada: Rasi Gandanta: Birth in the relevant

half a ghatika (12 minutes) concluding the

currency of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces ascendants. (This is not relevant

in longitude). Birth in the particular half a ghatika beginning the currency of Leo, Sagittarius as

the case maybe, are considered a births in gandanta.

The consequence is death.

a) Birth during such a phase during the day time, will cause father of

his/her father in the very first year.

b) In the case of night birth, his/her mother will die within 3 years.

c) Birth during twilight: The person will not be free from diseases

and will face early demise.

Yavanas: The

child born in any kind of gandanta should be

forsaken and should not be seen for the first six months.

Abhukta Mula:

(From Naradiya Purana)

The child is

treated as having been born in Abhukta Mula if birth is in the prahara

(equally and uninterruptedly) shared by Jyestha and Mula nakshatras as also the

births of Prahara of Aslesha

and Magha.

Sage Kasyapa holds the view that one born in the concluding part

of Hyestha or the beginning of Mula

is to be treated as born during Abhukta Mula, which are the conluding

durations of Aslesha, Jyestha

and Revathi which make up 1 prahara

(approximately 7.5 ghatikas or 3 hours or 1/8 part of

the day, which is from sunrise to sunrise) each, in combination with their

respective succeeding nakshatras of Magha, Mula and Asvini.

Saunaka Muni

holds the view as Vasishta on the above.

Pitamaha opines that birth in the last

1/16 part of each Aslesha, Jyestha

and Revathi, the first 1/16 part of Asvini, Magha and Mula should be treated as Abhukta

Mula.

Precisely,

the timing is about 90 minutes before each expiry of Jyestha,

Aslesha, Magha nakshatras are the four types of Abhukta

Mula according to Narada Muni.

Kasyapa Muni

did not specify the duration, while Vasishta Muni and Saunaka

Muni give the additional Abhukta

Mula in Revathi and Asvini.

A child born

in the Abhukta Mula nakshatra should be forsaken until his/her 8th year.

In the 9th year, propitiatory rites can be performed on the day of Janma nakshatra and thereafter,

the father/mother can see him/her and “adore” him/her.

9-14 Effects

of births in Mula and Aslesha:

1) Birth in

the first quarter of Mula will endanger Father while

that in the 2nd quarter will endanger Mother. Its 3rd quarter

will destroy grains and wealth (family properties) and the fourth quarter will

cause advent of wealth.

In the case

of Aslesha nakshatra, the

effects will be in the reverse order.

2) Saunaka Muni specifies the following

for girls born during the various quarters of Mula Nakshatra: 1st quarter will destroy quadrupeds

of the family. 2nd quarter will bless her with all kinds of

happiness. In the 3rd quarter, paternal kinfolk will be destroyed

and in the 4th quarter, maternal kinfolk will be destroyed.

3) Narada Muni states that birth

(for both sexes) in MUla nakshatra

will destroy his/her father-in-law, BUT for the last quarter of Mula and the 1st quarter of Aslesha,

there is no evil.

4) A girl’s

birth in Mula nakshatra

will carry evils for her father-in-law while that of Aslesha

will be inauspicious for her mother-in-law. similarly,

a Jyestha born (female) will be inauspicious for her

elder brother-in-law. it will be the younger borther-in-law that will face the wrath in the case of borth in Vishakha.

5) a girl born in the 4th quarter of Vishakha or that of Jyestha will

prove inauspicious.

EXCEPTIONS:

Garga Muni

states that ALL THREE gandantas (Tithi, Nakshatra, Rasi)

are nullified in the following cases:

Sunday ruled by Avini

nakshatra

Wednesday or Sunday in Hasta,

Chitra, Svati, Aniradha, Revati, Jyestha or Mula.

Vadarayana Muni: Gandanta caused by Mula, Aslesha and Revati will not be active if the ascendant lord is

UNASPECTED by Moon, who in turn should be with a weak malefic, not receiving

any benefic aspect.

Vasishta Muni:

The child will not prove harmful to the father of birth is in the first quarter

of Mula nakshatra if birth

is during the night. Similarly, the mother will not be endangered if birth is

in the 2nd quarter of Mula nakshatra.

As laid down

by Lord Brahma, the Moon enjoying full strength will make the two gandantas (Tithi and Nakshatra Gandantas) extinct.

Similarly,

the strength of Jupiter will eliminate the blemish of Rasi

gandanta.

Vasishta Muni:

Birth in Abhijit Muhurata

will counter the evils of any kind of gandanta just

as a hunter destroys a band of birds.

Abhiji Muhurata:

Divide the DAY duration into 15 equal parts. The currency of the 8th

part is Abhijit Muhurata,

which is capable of destroying ALL evils. (Night Abhijit

Muhurata is excluded).

Remedies:

Jyestha and Mula

nakshatra births: Precious stones, roots of 100

specified medicinal plants, 7 kinds of earth (collected form 7 different spots)

should be mixed in a pot (with 100 holes) containing water J

The father

and child should be bathed by a Brahmana and the said

water, following worship and fire sacrifice should be performed.

MULA nakshatra:

Destruction

of Dynasty: If birth coincides during Krishna Tritya,

Krishna Dasami, Shukla Chaturdashi, on a Tuesday, Saturday or Wednesday.

Mula nakshatra

are inauspicious for the following persons during these times: with day time

birth – father; twilight – maternal uncle;

night time – quadrupeds (of the family) or just before dawn – friends.

Mula’s

Dwellings: Mula resides in the netherworlds during

the months of Mrigashirsha, Phalguna,

Vaishakha and Jyestha. During

its tenancy in the netherworlds, the effects are inauspiciousness and obstacles.

It resides on

Earth during the months of Sravana, Kartika, Chaitra and Pausha.

It resides in

the Heavens in Ashadha, Asvina,

Bhadrapada and Magha. The

subject will attain kingdom.

Sage Vaishsta’s prescription of remedies:

Perform after

the expiry of the Sutaka period (period of impurity

is 11 days), which is in the 3 months or 1 year of birth.

Garga Muni:

To ward off evils for one’s mother, perform remedies on a day ruled by

the nakshatra of the child after Sutaka

period (Remedies can also be carried on the 12th day which is applicable

for the child’s mother).

The same sutaka period applies to a miscarriage.

Remedies in

detail: BPHS, else pages more from Hora Ratnam pages 241 onwards.

Love,

Swee

Nakshatra Gadanta - to Parthaji

Dear David

Yes, some people take one Navamsa, some take a degree on either side as

Gandantha.

Now if we go by 2 Ghatikas formula, it comes to 48 Minutes. Moon stays

in a nakshatra for approximately 23 hours. So here we are talking about

1/6th portion of a Quarter(Pada), which definitely suggests that it should be a

degree and not navamsa.

best wishes

Dear Parthaji,

First, I wish to congratulate you upon your promotion and consequent

raise in your wages.

May you receive many more such raises and promotions.

Now I have a question about Nakshatra Gadanta. The native of a

chart is born in Mula Nakshatra 1st Quarter and therefore as per BPHS Chap. 92

Sloka 3 is subject Nakshatra Gadanta. I notice that Nakshatra Gadanta is

effective in this case if Moola Nakshatra is in the first two ghatikas.

Moon is 3 degrees and 3 seconds. How am I to

ascertain that it is within the first two ghatikas of Moola Nakshatra?

Your explanation will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
