Guest guest
Namaste Brendan, Thank you for sending me some notes on the sub-doshas of vaata, pitta and kapha doshas. I went through them and pondered over them for a while. Earlier, I gave my thoughts on the influence of pancha-bhutas on the sub-doshas of pitta. I will do the same for vaata in this mail. The purpose of this mail is to get your views on my thoughts and to keep these in an archive for a possible future access. Vaata: Pitta is what transforms things, kapha is what retains things and vaata is what moves things. Anything in this world consists of these three components. Vaata is dominated by air and ether (vaayu and aakaasa tattvas). (1) Praana Vaayu: This is the life energy or the nervous energy that moves things. It moves signals from one place to another within our body. There is some fire also involved in this movement, as the nervous energy is based on the transformation (fire) of stimuli into nervous signals. So this is the variation of vaata that has the secondary influence of agni tattva (fire). (2) Samaana Vaayu: This kinetic energy deals with absorption of nutrients (retention) and balance of mind and emotions. This deals with retention and solidity. So this is the variation of vaata that has the secondary influence of bhoo tattva (earth). (3) Udaana Vaayu: This kinetic energy deals with upward moving air. It controls aspirations, psychic powers, expression, enthusiasm, judgment and the spirit to ascend. It is through this vaayu that Kundalini shakti rises. So this is the variation of vaata that has the secondary influence of aakaasa tattva (ether). (4) Apaana Vaayu: This kinetic energy deals with the driving out of the waste substances within the body (excretion). As this directly deals with an interaction with the external system, this may have the secondary influence of vaayu tattva (air) ruled by Saturn. (5) Vyaana Vaayu: This kinetic energy deals with *circulation* of energy within the body (e.g. blood circulation). Circulation of something is similar to retention and solidity (earth), but it is flexible. It is a flexible activity that takes the shape of the container. It has something watery to it. So this is the variation of vaata that has the secondary influence of jala tattva (water). In this manner, the five sub-doshas of vaata are given by the influence of the pancha (5) bhutas/tattvas on vaata. I observed the same thing with the sub-doshas of pitta earlier. An additional observation: A lady I know has had chronic constipation for several years. The Shashthamsa Paryaaya dasa running during this period belongs to a vaata rasi containing airy Saturn. The nature of the influences on Paryaaya dasa rasi is supposed to show the nature of the illnesses or troubles faced by the native. Saturn in a vaata rasi may give chronic disturbance of vaata, especially related to apaana vaayu (airy vaata). This may explain her chronic constipation. Acharya Rajneesh had only Ketu (ethery and spiritual planet) in vaata rasis. Ethery Ketu in a vaata rasi may have strengthened udaana vaayu and that may have helped his Kundalini rise. Another lady had Mars afflicted by Rahu and Ketu in a vaata rasi in D-6 and this negative fiery influence on vaata may be the reason for some nervous troubles she had. Of course, this is just for the starters and we have a long way to go in re-inventing the links and integrating Ayurveda and Jyotish. May Jupiter's light shine on us, Narasimha
