Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear Sitara (lovely name (:-) I dont recall sending anything like this - im sure u r confusing me with someone else. The number 108 is a very auspiscious number. Numerologically, 1+0+8 = 9, hence an auspiscious number. Also, 12 Rasis times 9 planets gives you 108 combinations. There are loads of other reasons too, please do search the archives of vedic astrology list, as I remember reading some good discussion on this. I havent heard of the significance to the number 28. Any light on this ... Swee? Actually, I wanted to know, what are the mantras, japas to be recited. Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear Bipin, Namaste [i havent heard of the significance to the number 28. Any light on this ... Swee?] Well, I've finally picked up my copies of the Vishnu Purana and this is what I've gathered on the number 28 and 27 (a quarter of 108). But this is my own interpretation of it :-) (Visti told me a couple of years ago that Lakshmi Ramesh is giving us an interpretation of the VS on behalf of SJC.) In each Yuga, Vishnu in his Vedavyasa form divided the Vedas which have been divided 28 times. The names of these are Svayambhu, Prajapati, Ushana, Brihaspati, Savitur, Mrityu, Indra, Vashishtha, Sarasvata, Tridhama, Trivrisha, Bharadvaja, Kritanjaya, Antarisksha, Vapri, Trayaruna, Dhananjaya, Kritanjaya, Rinajaya, Bharadvaja, Gautama, Haryatma, Vena, Trivavindu, Risha, Shaktri, Parashara, Jatukarna and Krishna Dvaipayana. (On their energies and duties, I guess more can be learnt from the Puranic Encyclopaedia. (Want to volunteer?) VS was written after Padma Purana and in VS, our next Vedavyasa is the immortal Dronacharya's son, Ashvatthama. What I'm leading to is the story concerning Yagnavalka. The 28 suggests Abhijit is to be included in the Nakshatras. (The terrible blunder that Vaishampayana did in stepping on his nephew and killing equated to the killing of a Brahmana.) Vaishampayana had divided the Yajur Veda into 27 parts. Each of these were distributed to one of his disciples and one on them was Yagnavalka who suggested that he alone could arrange for a sacrifice to enable his Guru to atone for his sin. His enraged his Guru so much he asked his sishya to return all that was taught to him. Yagnavalka returned it by vomiting it out and the other disciple ate them up in the form of birds. (This portion is known as the Taittiriya which is named after the bird Tittira). Because Yagnavalka wanted to learn about the Vedas, he turned and prayed to the Sun who appeared to him in the form of a horse (Jupiter/Sagittarius) who taught the branches of the Yajur Veda that even Vaishampayana never knew existed. Each of these 28 nakshatras is akin to a particular energy in the Supreme Lord's potencies/personification even though their trinal signs are ruled by one of the planets (e.g. 0deg - 13deg 20 Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are all ruled by Ketu next degree portion of the same signs is ruled by Venus and so on). So these are the 28 oblations required in a yagna. Because of the full offerings to all 28 potencies, the punya received can be even greater through past merits (as shown in Yagnavalka's prayer to Agni Deva (Sun; natural 5th House, future knowledge) and the Horse's appearance (the natural 9th; past knowledge). Anyway, I am wiped out after a 4 hour sleep last night with a wake up call at 4:20 am. I will leave it to the experts like Sarbani and Sanjay ji to enlighten us :-) Love, Swee On Behalf Of Bipin Prag Wednesday, September 21, 2005 9:47 PM Re: [Jaya Jagannatha] Inauspicious Births Jaya Jagannatha Dear Sitara (lovely name (:-) I dont recall sending anything like this - im sure u r confusing me with someone else.
