Senses - Body: Ayurveda

Dear Yasomati Nandana,

 

You have asked a very relevant question about studying the physical body which is the basis of Ayurveda. In this the uninitiated shall find the principles of Jaimini and Parasara at loggerheads whereas when we go slightly deeper, then this becomes crystal clear.

 

The Kalapurusha has been well defined for the body parts from Aries (or first house) to Pisces (or 12th house) and the body parts are also clearly indicated. The first item in the first house is the head, in the second house is the face with the eyes & mouth and in the third house is the arms with the ears following the first drekkana, and so on.

 

What is of concern to the Jyotisha is the functioning of the body organs and the senses. The five senses overlorded by the Mana are the blessings of Dharma and they shall function and be protected by Dharma. For this, the Mana is governed by the Moon with the two Guru's Jupiter and Venus and is indicated by the Lagna primarily. The eye is in the second house and the ninth house (Dharma) for this is the tenth house being ninth from the second. Thus the tenth house shows the protection or evil to the eyes. Coming to the ears, these are in the third house and the ninth from this is the eleventh house which protects or controls its functioning. Similarly the fourth house shows the nose and the twelfth house shows the control or protection of the nose.

 

Now if we find that there is affliction in the tenth house and enemies of the Luminaries are present, then the sight maybe defective or lost due to this. Similarly, if Venus or seventh lord is in the tenth then the eyes develop weakness due to excessive sexuality. For example: I have always stated that the second lord associated with Mars and placed in the 11th house shall damage the speech. Why? Mars always afflicts the 12th house from where it is placed and here, conjoining the 2nd Lord and being a deadly enemy of Mercury (significator of speech) it shall afflict the speech. Further it is Maraka to the 10th house being in the 11th house. This shall damage the speech. In this manner the beneficence or malefic results should be understood.

 

Let us take another example. Smell is seen from Saturn. Ketu is a terrible natural enemy of Saturn being always retrograde while Saturn always gives direct count (keep this in mind). So, ketu in the third house can cause eardrum perforation, especially from Navamsa Lagna.

 

From the above examples we conclude that "physical parts connected with the senses are ruled by the houses indicated by Parasara while their functioning and control and tatwa are from the Dharma Bhava of these houses as indicated by Jaimini".

 

The five senses are protected by Dharma and the ONLY remedy lies in the Gayatri Mantra Japa.

Dear Gurudev,Please accept my respectful obeisances. Jaya Jagannath!Can you please hep clarify my confusion regarding correspondence of the senses and the houses.Often they say that sight is from the 2nd, and ear - from the 3rd on the basis of the bodily parts of Kalapurusa. You teach that one should see vision from the 10th and hearing - from the 11th? Can you please explain wnat are the principles behind this. >From which houses should we also see other senses - touch, taste and smell?
