Rath: Vivekananda observed: " Religion consists in realization. We all know as a fact that nothing will satisfy us until we realize the Truth for ourselves. However much we may argue, however much we may hear, but one thing will satisfy us, and that is our own realization; and such an experience is possible for every one of us, if we will only try. Let us attempt to synchronise the Lunar Years (Vedic Calander) with the 120 Year cycle of the Sun. > > Are yugas and yugantaras aligned with these lunar years or with > Saturn-Jupiter conjunctions? The date of start of Kali Yuga given > traditionally happens to be a lunar new year day. Rath: The vedic calander shall always start from the Pratipada signifying the begining. The conjunction of Jup-Saturn need not be exact for this event. > > Why are these years - which are aligned with lunar years - said > to be based on Sani-Guru cycle? I can basically understand it, > but Saturn-Jupiter motion is not really regular and > Saturn-Jupiter conjunctions and Jupiter's motion in various rasis > are not exactly aligned with lunar years. Please throw more light > on this important topic. Rath: Saturn is aligned with the Moon and its motion around the zodiac in years is like the Lunar motion in the constellations in a month. Similarly, the Jupiter is aligned with the Sun and it takes 12 years to do what the Sun does in 12 months. Now, the Sun-Moon relationship is transformed into a Jup-Sat relationship at another plane. Thus, their conjunctions in a sign are akin to the " Pratipada " or begining of a new time cycle. The major difference is that while the Sun is slower than the Moon, the Jupiter is faster than Saturn. The non-alignment is due to their actual motion in the sidereal zodiac. But, if we consider their motion like the mean nodes i.e. always direct, then some alignment will show up. However, this is not really necessary as what are we going to achieve by it? My questions have not been attempted by anybody as yet. I hope atleast a few shall attempt this. Om Tat Sat Best Wishes Sanjay Rath
