Guest guest
Dear learned people, What do you think is the origin of the word nakshatras... is it (a) nak-kshatra, which means the power (or ruler) of the night, or (b) na-kshatra, meaning powerless? I do remember someone (dad?) telling me eons ago that Sun's preeminence on our lives increased with the waning of the power of the nakshatras, which made me wonder... If you know the answer but feel it irrelevant to this forum, I'd appreciate a private mail. Respects, Ramapriya ayirpamar PS: Any links to the Shatapatha Brahmana? Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear Ramapriya How about the possibility of the derivation from 'nakS' - nakSdyAm ? Ever thought of that? Guest guest
Shri Brahmadaru Smarami Dear Ramapriya, The spelling of naksa as map is different from naksha. That is these two words are different. Naksa means design, motif, and perhaps map. Tra also does not mean guide. Naksha means to come near as you have already written. Now, nakta means the night...wonder whether that was the etymology...I will try and ask a Sanskrit scholar about this. Because we have to break down the grammar of the word and then get the meaning.
