Om Sree Mahaganadhipataye Namah

Om Sree Mahalakshmi Srimannarayanabhyam Namah

Namaste friends,

Sanjay allotted me exercise (1) and asked me to give the final answer

at the end of 25th June.

I am giving my answer to the question below. But one warning: Sanjay

asked gurus to give the " final answer " . What you read below can

hardly be the " final answer " . As I better my understanding of raja

yogas with further study, I can give a better answer.

Only a few of you have attempted the question, probably because this

exercise came during a weekend or because it was too general and you

didn't know where to start. Most of you correctly thought raja yoga

makes one a king or an equal. Some of you talked correctly about the

conjunction of quadrant and trine lords. Gauranga also mentioned the

advanced rules involving AK and PiK. Some nice examples, including

those of Lord Rama and Dr. B.V. Raman, were given by you. I am

pleased to read your answers. I don't have much more to add, but I

will give a small and concise account of my understanding of Raja

Yogas for everyone's benefit.

* * *

WHAT IS RAJA YOGA

The word yoga means " being together/acting together " . The

word " raaja " is used in the sense of " king " in today's world. It has

many meanings " king, chief, sovereign, the best of one's kind " . Raja

yoga is a combination that shows factors acting together to make

someone the excel in something. Raja yogas don't necessarily produce

kings or people with power in the material sense. Kings and

materially powerful people form only one subset of people with raja

yoga. Raja yogas make people " the best of their kind " . They make

people excel in something or the other.

BASIC RAJA YOGA

There are many different Raja Yogas mentioned by Parasara. Of those,

the most basic one involves quadrant and trine lords. Quadrants are

the abode of Narayana and trines are the abode of His wife Sri

Lakshmi. Quadrants show sustaining activities and trines show

prosperity. Any links between the lord of a quadrant and the lord of

a trine show the linking of Vishnu maya - sustaining activity - and

Lakshmi sakti - prosperity. That shows prosperity.

We said that relationship between the lord of a quadrant and the lord

of a trine results in raja yoga. We can consider the following

relationships:

(1) mutual exchange (one planet in the other's rasi and vice versa),

(2) conjunction (two planets together in one rasi)

(3) aspect (two planets aspecting each other)

Some people take being in mutual quadrants or trines also as a

relationship, but the above three are important.

OTHER RAJA YOGAS

There are many other raja yogas listed in chapter 39 of BPHS. The

most important one is: Association of 1st and 5th lords and, at the

same time, association of AK (atma karaka) and PiK (Pitri karaka -

5th chara karaka) brings a powerful raja yoga. An example will be

given later. Association of 5th and 9th lords can also give a

powerful raja yoga. There are many other raja yogas and please read

chapter 39 and Sanjay's COVA (discussion on Akbar's chart). Instead

of listing them, I hope you can go through these references and give

some examples that you come across.

In addition to this chapter, Parasara mentioned raja yogas in other

places. For example, in the chapter on avasthas, he explicitly said

that Moon in the 10th house in Prakaasana (shining) or Kautuka

(eager) avasthas gives a raja yoga. Unless we read the whole BPHS

carefully, we will not know all raja yogas.

FRUCTIFICATION OF A RAJA YOGA

A raja yoga cannot fructify unless Sun and Moon have strength. If a

planet taking part is in debilitation or combustion or a kshobhita

avastha (or other bad avasthas) or if functional malefics afflict the

raja yoga giving planets, raja yoga becomes weak. Dr. B.V. Raman

taught that the planets producing raja yoga by conjunction or aspect

should have a close conjunction or close aspect for the yoga to be

effective. Still we find that these raja yogas are common, but only a

few people really get the results.

Parasara gave some useful hints. He said that we should look at the

favorable amsas occupied by raja yoga producing planets. The strength

of the raja yoga increases with the two planets in better amsas. For

example, if two planets in Gopuramsa give raja yoga in a chart, the

person will be a great and special king. If two planets in

Simhasanamsa give raja yoga in a chart, the person will be an

emperor. This is a rare yoga and Harischandra (king who never lied),

Manu (progenitor of human race), Bali (charitable demon king), Agni

(Fire god - Vaiswanara), Yudhisthira (Dharmaraja - the eldest of

Pandavas of Mahabharata) and Salivahana (a great Indian king of kali

yuga) were born with two raja yoga producing planets in Simhasanamsa.

All of Vishnu's avataras are born with two raja yoga producing

planets in Devalokamsa. Raja yoga involving 2 planets in

Brahmalokamsa results in the birth of Brahma. In Airavatamsa,

Svaayambhuva Manu was born. One should realize that these are all

very very rare combinations that occur only once in many many many

mahayugas.

When we see that two strong planets take part in a raja yoga, we can

look at the favorable amsas occupied by them and make a judgment

based on it. In most charts, we do not see both raja yoga producing

planets being in good amsas. So even if one planet is in Uttamamsa or

Gopuramsa, good results may be produced. If both the planets are in

Uttamamsa, Gopuramsa etc (which is not very common), we can

confidently predict excellent results.

Parasara hinted that the planet with higher shadbala gives the

results of a yoga.

EXAMPLE 1

Already several excellent examples, including Sri Ramachandra and Dr.

B.V. Raman, were given. I will give one more example. This chart

belongs to Swami Chandrasekhara Sraswati, who was the chief pontiff

at Kanchi Kamakoti peetha.

Lagna lord is Sun. Jupiter is the 5th lord. They conjoin in the 10th

house of karma, forming a powerful raja yoga! Jupiter is in

Uttamamsa. AK is Saturn and PiK is Rahu. They aspect each other and

Saturn is in Uttamamsa. So we have another powerful rajayoga. In

addition, Jupiter in the 7th from arudha lagna shows undying fame.

There are powerful raja yogas in this chart.

However, there are also pravrajya yogas. For example, Moon is

debilitated in AL. Moon's despitor Ketu joins Saturn. Saturn is AK

and he aspects Moon. We have yogas for renunciation. In addition, we

have Tapaswi yoga (yoga for penance) due to Saturn and Ketu being

together, aspected by Venus.

Uttamamsa and the yoga is reasonably strong.

(2) Lagna and 10th lord Jupiter has an aspect with 9th lord Mars and

this gives another raja yoga. Jupiter is in Simhasanamsa and this

yoga is more powerful.

(3) The 5th lord Moon and the 4th/7th lord Mercury aspect each other

and we have another raja yoga.

(4) In my humble view, an exalted planet in Prakaasana (shining)

avastha in the 10th house (karma) gives raja yoga stronger than all

of the above. One's karma (action) is primarily based on the 10th

house. If planets in own or exaltation rasis influence the 10th house

being in Prakaasana (shining) or Kautuka (eager) avasthas, that

results in excellent deeds. Ketu is in Prakaasana avastha in the 10th

house and he is exalted. The 10th lord Jupiter is also in Prakaasana

avastha and he is in own sign in Simhasanamsa with 7 rekhas in

ashtakavarga. This gives a raja yoga that makes one attain perfection

in spiritual matters (Ketu) and perform good deeds in the direction

indicated by Ketu and Jupiter. [This yoga wasn't explicitly mentioned

by Parasara, but it is a simple extension of his hints.]

* * *

I will stop there and ask you to read chapter 39 of BPHS when you get

time and apply it on the charts you have. Also read Sanjay's analysis

of Akbar's chart. Akbar was the greatest Muslim emperor to rule India

and Sanjay's analysis was superb.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

Dear Mr.Narasimha,

I read somewhere that the sambandha for 9th & 10th house lords, to qualify

for Rajayoga, includes the placement of lord in other lord's Nakshatra and

vise versa, apart from other sambandhas of conjunction, mutual aspects and

parivarthana.

Is it true?

Thanks

The native was one of the greatest pontiffs to be in control of the

math and Prime Ministers, Presidents and Chief Ministers came to him

to seek his blessings. He guided millions of Hindus spiritually.

EXAMPLE 2

Let us take our own Sanjay's chart.

(1) AK Saturn is in Cp and PiK Venus is in Cn. They have a mutual

aspect. This gives a raja yoga as well as Tapaswi yoga. Saturn is in

* * *

I will stop there and ask you to read chapter 39 of BPHS when you get

time and apply it on the charts you have. Also read Sanjay's analysis

of Akbar's chart. Akbar was the greatest Muslim emperor to rule India

and Sanjay's analysis was superb.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

PS: Narayan, I saw your mail just before sending this one. Good job,

keep it up!
