Dear Bharat,

Namaste

?

These are the names I have retrieved from Garuòa Purana for Emerald

substitute:

?

Bhallataka ?which is a very close imitation of emerald in features, colour

and quality but its colour fades and changes when air is blown over it.

It can be Green Beryl from Brazil, whose colour is not stable. It loses its

colour when it has been exposed to Air/Sun. The other one that loses its

colour is Spodumene. Zambian and Nigerian Green Beryls are stable in colour.

?

Putrika loses its brilliance when rubbed with a silken cloth. This can be

either Apatite or Peridot. Apatite’s colour is greener (less of the  y

ellowish tinge) but both Apatite and Peridot are very soft stones. After

wearing for about a year, you might as well throw away the Peridot. :-) Most

Apatite workings are around the same mining area where Aquamarine (Beryl) is

found.

?

In Emerald mining areas, mostly green Tourmalines are found. I have also

found something that maybe of interest for budding miners:

That if your Tourmaline finds are very good, then the finds for the

Aquamarine is mostly eroded. (Usually,  these finds are close by). Vanadium

is the compound that colours the blue beryl (aquamarine) green. (One can

also find the same compound in green Chrysoberyl).

?

I think we can safely conclude that, because Emerald comes from the Beryl

family, the best substitute is the Green Beryl which is a fraction of the

price of Emerald.

?

Love,

Swee

Presently, I do not know the Sanskrit names for Peridot and Tourmaline. One

of the articles with me from GII, Mumbai states that Peridot is derived from

the word " Faridat " . This is said to be an arabic word which means " Gem " .

Tourmaline comes from the Sri Lankan Singhalese word " tura mali " . Tura Mali

means a gem of many colors. Tourmaline is actually found in many different

colors. Some beautiful tourmalines are of mixed colors.

If I come to know of their sanskrit names, I shall share it with you.

Thanks and Regards

Dear Freedom,

Namaste

How have you been?!! Are coming over to join us in Jan.?

Thank you, thank you, for taking the trouble to type out the Sanskrit names

for some of the gemstones.

The puSparAga is NOT Topaz, I can assure you. Topaz does not come in those

colours as described in the GaruDa PurANa. PuSparAga, Manikya, Nilam, etc

all fall under the corundum family.

Hessonite falls under the garnet family group.

Jadeite falls under the augnite/pyroxene family group - Jadeite (very rare),

Nephrite (common), diopside (chromium colours this green, hence looks very

similar to Emerald, though much darker green), Beryllonite - it is

colourless/white with yellow streak - has a vitreous look; personally, looks

better than diamond :-)! ; Brazillianite - Beautiful Yellow! (some

yellowish-green); and others including Lazulite - Dark Blue to Blue-White;

Dioptase, Apatite, Sphene etc etc

Are there more names, please? I need to identify a lot more than these, but

some you can make out especially spinel as it is common to find spinel in

the same pit when you are mining rubies......but some freak finds like

spessartite has been found at my mine. Though there is no kimberlite there,

the diamond is alluvial. About 300 metres within the same boundary is the

aquamarine mine.

Do you recommend this book? How do I get a hold of a copy?

Namaskar Svee,

I won't be making it in January this year, as job (money/time) reality does

not allow.

I would recommend all the books on rasa shastra, which is the science of

grinding up gemstones for medical use, as well as talking to some vaidyas

who specialize in this. These books also go into debates about the Sanskrit

names and what stone they represent with rasa shastra to argue their points.

In some of these texts they not only mention the stone and colors but shapes

like:

" Vaikraanta consists of eight edges, eight facets, six angles, it is smooth

and heavy. There are 7 varieties of single and combined colors. There are

white, red, yellow, blue, pigeon, blackish/brown, and mixed color.

Rasa paddhati also prescribes above seven but with emphasis that black

vaikraanta is highly useful for therapeutic purpose while others are not

recommended.

Vaikraanta contains all six tastes, pacifies all three dosas, makes the body

strong. It cures paaNDu, udara roga, jwara, shvaasa, kaasa, yakSmaa, and

prameha. "

In Ayruveda, the gems are being taken internally so the identification is a

little more specific than the Puranas. Though many of the texts are in

Sanskrit and Hindi, more than English.

I have always wanted to correlate the medical uses given in the texts with

the grahas, and try to relate the different gemstones to the grahas in this

way. In time....

The rasa shastra texts also talk about individual minerals/metals and their

properties. In this way, I have thought, it is possible to see the various

composition of gemstones and understand their properties better.

In Varanasi and Pune there are special Ayurvedic bookstores that have these

books. I don't know of any ayurveda specialized bookstores in Delhi, maybe

someone else does.

Dear Freedom,

Namaste

Pity, thought you'd be doing your bi-annually visit as usual :( I'll miss

you.

Just remember that a gemstone in its original state does not have any colour

- colourless-white. It is the different minerals and chemicals that lend the

colour to them. So many family groups have similar colours, therefore, it is

better we group them to their content. Chrome colours the tourmaline red and

it is the same mineral as in spinel and ruby.

BTW, tourmaline has an especial property no other gemstone has. Rub it, and

it attracts the ores like a magnet. It is the only gem with a north-south

pole. I use the black tourmaline to heal a lot of people suffering from back

pains, arthritis, rheumatism......all indications of Saturn. You can imagine

the energy pull at the mine with 98% schrol (black tourmaline).

My feeling is, if distant healing with my gemstones work, why would you need

to grind these gemstones down? Just a thought........
