Guest guest
Namaste Frank, In " Ghrinih " , the sound G is the regular g. Because of h after it, make it aspirated. So you should have no problem with " Gh " . The fun starts now. The next sound is an vowel typically written as " ri " (as in rishi, pitri, krishna etc). North Indians pronounce it as " ri " (rishi, pitri etc) and south Indians pronounce it as " ru " (rushi, pitru etc). Both pronounce what it supposed to be an vowel as a combination of a consonant ® and a vowel (i or u). Neither is the correct pronunciation. The correct pronunciation of the vowel " ri " is to try to pronounce the consonant (or semi-vowel) " r " (as in " war " ) and stop half the way!! You should pronounce it in such a way that saying it and saying " a " immediately after it results in the sound " ra " . (In Sanskrit, the consonants/semi-vowels ya, ra, la and va are obtained by saying " a " immediately after the vowels i, ri, lu and u.) So the correct pronunciation of " Ghri " is " gh® " , where ® means r pronounced half the way. The sound " n " is the alveolar nasal. When you normally pronounce the default " n " of English, the tip of your tongue touches the teeth or the gums. Pronounce n with the tip of the tongue touching the inside of mouth a little away from the gums (move the tongue into the mouth - away from gums - a little). You get alveolar n. After that, we have the vowel " i " , which is long. It is like " ee " in " feet " . After all this trouble, if you take a deep breath and let the air go, it will be " h " (visarga). Good luck!
