Jai Jai Shri Jagannath!!!

Dear Narasimha,

Thank you very much for the congratulatory message. By the blessings of Sri Jagannath both (wife & daughter) are fine.

I thought I should remind you for your article for the JN - March issue. Also, I would attempt an answer to a part of your ongoing discussion.

>Ashtottari dasa is also for 108 years. Is that related to the> same factor? If so, why is mokshakaraka excluded it Ashtottari> and included in Vimsottari?

Vimshottari Dasa is governed by Jupiter while Ashtottari Dasa is governed by Venus. When we talk of Moksha it is Jupiter who is the overlord of the department of Moksha and Ketu (Ganesh - being the one sets the gati for Moksha) exalts in Sagittarius (the house of Jupiter and the 9th in the naisargika chakra). Hence we talk of Moksha in Vimshottari and, therefore, the Moksha karaka Ketu is also reckoned in this Dasa system. In Ashtottari we are not talking of Moksha. This dasa system is limited only to the extent of death. Therefore the 12 years given by Ketu (Moksha Karak) is removed from the purna ayu of human life (120 - 12 = 108) in this system (Ashtottari) and it is thus limited to 108 years unlike Vimshottari Dasa where the life span is 120 years.

Sanjay may correct me if I am wrong or short in explanation.

Regards,

Sarat.
