Dear Nimmi Ragavan,

Jaya Jagannatha!

>a) Men can often be very emotional and women can often be very practical. Gullibility is not the privilege of >either sex. The attempt to preserve a so called 'innocence' is the very thing that makes young people of either >gender vulnerable to exploitation. You only have to read the tabloid papers today to see vulnerable young >men being exploited as readily as sheltered women were in times past.

I am sorry but I don't read tabloid papers so I cannot comment on that. My statement was general.

>Women today do not really need 'protection' from the world. Actually, they have not needed it for a very long >time. Children do. Not adult women. They only do so if their upbringing has been aimed at keeping them at a >childish level.

As far as I know woman in Vedic society were never meant or aimed to be brought up and kept on childish level. Traditionally woman would take a big part of burden of maintaining home and raising children while husband would provide for all the needs of the family. With the progress of Kali yuga things have changed around and now man and woman are finding themselves in unnatural positions in society.

>b) This was written in a time when modern methods of contraception were not available. This should be >considered today. Unwanted progeny can be avoided simply by giving sons and daughters early access to >information on contraception. This seems to be the main argument for 'protecting' women.

In Vedic time contraceptive methods were available but were used by prostitutes only. Usage of contraception methods and abortion is something unheard of in Vedic society. You are member of Sri Jagannatha Vedic Center and you should've known this. See the example of Kunti.

>c) The best way to 'protect' a young woman today is to ensure she has a good education, sound ethics in how >to treat a fellow human being, and the responsibility for her own mental, emotional and aterial welbeing.

Sounds good but there is more to it.

Hare Krishna,

Dina-natha Das.
