Namaskaar Sri HariYou have asked interesting questions and following are my views:

(1) Regarding the link between the vargas and panchakosas, where do the sariras fit in?The Anamaya Kosha is the sthoola sarira(physical body) . The pranamaya, manomaya and vijnanamaya kosha form the sookshma sarira (subtle body). The anandamaya kosha is the causal body.

[Hari] Thanks for clarifying this issue. Based on whatever I have read till today, this is my understanding also. It looks like the sariras and koshas have some degree of interplay or is it that they have separate functional roles?

(2) Do the panchakosas show varying spheres of influence, all converging on the rasi chart, so as to speak?

This is what it seems like, atleast logically so. I had written couple of months back about how Shastiamsa chart may be representative of the anandamaya kosha. This is something that we need to research on.

[Hari] Based on a verbal discussion with Sanjay sometime in May 2005, I had posted a rudimentary theory of six-level Vimsottari Dasa giving the mapping of panchakosas with the harmonics (D1-D12, D13 - D24, D25 - D36, D37 - D48 & D48 - D60).

(3) Is the flow of information in the panchakosas from inside to outside or vice-versa?

Subtle rules over the gross. The causes of the outermost kosha are the inner koshas. Ignorance-> misrepresentation->thought->desire->physical action. If you see, it is from the inner kosha to the outer. Some people say, if object was not there, then why there be a desire. The Veda points out the object is seen only because of the misrepresentation. So, it is always inside to outside.

[Hari] Thanks once again. I had some preliminary understanding and your reply makes things much clearer now. A similar direction of flow takes place from the shastiamsa to the rasi chart in the sense that the seed of past karma is present in the shastiamsa while the fruit is in the rasi chart. How to link the two and time the evolution is the challenge.

(4) In this context, I would like to know your opinion on the verses 11: 9 to 13 in Bhagavad Gita. Do they have any relevance to the on-going debate?

In Chapter 11 and in the verses given: Sri Krishna shows Arjuna his divine form. It is to point out that whatever thing or being is known to him is within the Isvara. It is the apparent Maya that divides stuff and makes them seem real. If we apply this understanding to Astrology and to this discussion: the panchkosas are imagined and only Isvara exists. The imagined panchkosas are lent reality by the Maya within us and therefore, the rules of Astrology shall apply.

[Hari] Very interesting. The motivation behind this question, in the context of the varga chart debate, was when Krishna can assume two separate identites (Viswaroopa form and another form which is a subset of the Viswaroopa form), could we not trace a Jyotish parallel to show that rasi chart and varga charts are two separate identities with a tangible link?
