Guest guest
||Hare Rama Krsna|| Dear Ajit and Sarbani, Namaskar I’m back. In continuation of this discussion on the Shiva linga puja: when i was in Rishikesh a shopkeeper explained that the five offerings to Shiva as being Water, Milk, Ghee, Honey and Curd, as Sarbani had described in her email. He further explained that this was to be offered in a bowel and mixed thus becoming Panchamrita. This is offered and then distributed as prasad. I found a similar description on the shreemaa.org site. Sarbani described that this is related to the five heads of Shiva, and this to me makes perfect sense, as the five heads of Shiva are the five mahapurusha yogas, which when strengthened, makes one tattva perfectly strong. Now can you just confirm the order as given by you to be: Water – Tatpurusha Vayu Milk – Aghora Agni Ghee – Sadyojata Prithvi Honey – Vamadeva Jala Curd – Ishana Akasha I would have associated Honey with Agni in this list, so please confirm or broaden our understanding. Dear Visti and Sarbani, See http://www.mudgala.com/articles/panchayatana.html Thanks for catching the typo. Tatpurusha corresponds to vayu tattwa. I have never seen the pancha-mukhas worshipped with specific dravyas, and am not aware of the mapping. I am hoping that Sarbani can clarify. As far as I know, the pancha-mukha worship occurs in two places: in the ravanokta mahanyasa as a mental puja, and in the pancha-kalasha shiva puja where water is offered. Guest guest
Shri Brahmadaru Smarami Dear Visti, I second what Ajit said, in that the dravyas are not mixed in prior but offered separaetly with separate mantras etc. Also, as he wrote, water is not considered a part of the dravyas. In fact after bathing with each dravya, water is poured on the shiva linga with the mantra Om Pashupataye Namah to wash the linga further. In fact, water in constantly in the process of Shiva worship, with any of the mantras. Guest guest
Dear members, This is a great discussion and would be a great article on my blog. Anyway, according to my limited knowledge I found the following: COW MILK OFFERING FOR BATH With a deep feeling that the Great Lord, who destroyed the three cities has sipped the palmpit water, he should be offered to have cow-milk for bath by reciting the following verse: Madhuram Gopaya: Punyam, Patapootam Puraskritam. Snaanaarth Deyva deyveysh, Grihaan parmeyshwara. CURD-BATH VERSE With the assumption that the cow-milk presented for bath has been accepted, curd for same purpose shall be offered, reciting this verse. Durlabhamdivya Suswaadu Dadhi sarv priyamparam. Tushti dampaarwateenaath, Snaanaaya pratigrihyataam. GHEE (BUTTER-OIL) BATH VERSE When this act is over, and it has been felt that Paarwateenath has taken bath in curd, he is required to have the offer of butter-oil (Ghee) for further bath. Ghritam gavyam shuchirasnigdham, Suseyayam pushtidaayakam. Grihaan Girijaanaath, Snaanaaya Chandrasheykhar. HONEY-BATH VERSE Feeling as such that Lord Maheswar has taken bath in Ghee, a devotee is to offer Honey for taking bath. Madhuram mridumohaghnam, Swarabhang vinaashanam. Mahaadeyvey Dumutsristam, Tavasnaanaya Shankar. SUGAR-BATH VERSE After Madhusnaam (Honey-bath) the Lord is to be offered sugar by reciting the verse as follows : Taapashaantimkaree sheera, Madhuraa swaad sanyuntaa. Snaanaarth deyvadeyveysh, Sharkareyvam Pradeeyatey. Thus, finalizing the order to: Tattwa - Mukha - Dravya Akasha - Ishana - Milk Vayu - Tatpurusha - Curd Agni - Aghora - Ghee Apa - Vamadeva - Honey Prithivi - Sadyojata - Sugar However, this is not it. In Ekadasa-Rudra Abhisheka, every Rudra is chanted with distinctive articles for Abhisheka. Ganga water, milk, ghee, honey, rose-water, cocoanut water, sandal paste, Panchamrita, scented oil, sugarcane juice and lime juice are made use of for Abhisheka. However, there may be other mantras that I am not aware of. If anyone is aware of any other mantras used during panchamrita worship, please do educate me on the same. Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Namaste Friends, I found the following lines in panchamrita abhisheka of Lakshmi & Satya narayana pooja.I don't know if there are different shlokas for Shiva worship. with milk ---------- apyaayasva sametu te viswathassomavrishNiyam bhavaa vaajasya sangadhe sri mahalakshmi mahaadevyainamah ksheereNa snapayaami With curd --------- dadhikraavNo akaarisham jishNorasvasya vaajinaH surabhino mukhaakaratpraNa ayoogmshitaarishat sri mahalakshmi mahaadevyainamah dadhnaa snapayaami With ghee ---------- shukramasi jyotirasi tejosi devovassavitotpunaa tvachhitdreNa pavithreNa vaso sooryasya rashmibhiH sri mahalakshmi mahaadevyainamah aajyena snapayaami With honey ---------- madhuvaataa ritaayate madhu ksharanti sindhavaH maadhviirnassannthvoshadhiiH madhu nakta muthoshasi madhumatpaarthivagm rajaH madhudyaurastu naH pitaa madhumaanno vanaspatirmadhumaagm astu sooryaH maadhviirgaavo bhavantu naH sri mahalakshmi mahaadevyainamah madhunaa snapayaami With sugar ---------- svaaduH pavasya divyaaya janmane svaadurindraaya suhaveetu naamne svaadurmitraaya varuNaaya vaayave brihaspathaye madhumaam adaabhyaH sri mahalakshmi mahaadevyainamah sharkarayaa snapayaami As for mapping the pancha dravyas to pancha bhootas, I feel that Milk – Jala Curd - Vaayu Ghee - Agni Honey - Akasha Sugar - Prithvi My reasoning is that milk is synonymous with Mother/Moon, hence is jala tattwa. Honey is akin to wealth/wisdom, which is gathered painstakingly over a period of time. Apart from this, it's colour, sweetness, natural immunity etc point more to Jupiter. Honey is yielded only after killing / chasing away the bees (selfishness/avarice/material desires) and by straining/squeezing the honeycomb (body). As flowers are linked to akasa tattwa, so is honey which is gathered from flowers. Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Dear Sarbani, Around 60kms from Tirupati, there is a place called Surutpalli, where Shiva is worshipped as " Tatpurusha " . Here Lord Shiva can be seen lying in a swoon on the lap of Mother Sarva Mangala, after consuming halahala during ksheera sagara mathanam. I don't think you can see this form anywhere else. It's around 14kms from Nagalapuram, which has perhaps the only Matsyavatara temple in the world, and Lord Vishnu was supposed to have killed somaka at this place. Regards, Lakshmi sohamsa , " Sarbani Sarkar " <sarbani wrote: > > Shri Brahmadaru Smarami > > Dear Swee, > > They are talking of the five heads of Shiva, which have the following names: > Ishana, Tatpurusha, Aghora, Vamadeva and Sadyojata. > > Best Regards, > > Sarbani > > > > > _____ > > Swee Chan [swee] > Thursday, February 02, 2006 3:04 PM > sohamsa > RE: Re: Five offerings to Shiva > > > Jaya Jagannatha > > Dear Lakshmi Ramesh :-)), Ajit, > Namaste > > The 5 deities of Siva are Aditya, Ganesh, Durga, Rudra and Visnu in > order.(Siva Purana Chapter 25). > How would be relate the pachamrita to them? > > The mantras allotted to each offering are vedic mantras. Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Dear Swee, Yes, that set of 5 deities constitutes Shiva panchayatanam. Ajit has a lovely write up on panchayatana puja on his website. In the Shiva panchayatnam at our home, we have Naaga (subrahmanya) too. I think both panchayatana pooja and panchamrita abhishekam aim at trikarana shuddhi, which embraces all karma and jnaana indriyas + manah and subsequent elevation/dissociation of self from the elements. And, when that amrita abhisheka/cleansing happens all the time, One is indeed Shiva, the ultimate yogi. Regards, Lakshmi P.S: My son is better, thank you, but is still weak. sohamsa , " Swee Chan " <swee wrote: > > Jaya Jagannatha > > Dear Lakshmi Ramesh :-)), Ajit, > Namaste > > The 5 deities of Siva are Aditya, Ganesh, Durga, Rudra and Visnu in > order.(Siva Purana Chapter 25). > How would be relate the pachamrita to them? > > The mantras allotted to each offering are vedic mantras. Guest guest
Dear Lakshmiji, Maybe you have not visited Tarapith. I am a Bengali and so I have grown up in the land of Kali. The image of Tara Maa that is usually seen (that is if you go to the temple anytime) is not the original image. The original image is taken out and worshipped on special days (I donot recollect the day now). The original figure shows Tara Maa having two hands is garlanded with snakes, is adorned in sacred threads, and has Shiva lying in her left lap sucking her breast. This is a divine image and was hidden from common man as it may be misunderstood. Shiva, who was unconscious after consuming halahal could be brought to consciousness by none other than Jagadambey Maa Tara. So, I guess Surutpalli temple has a compitetor in Bangla Regards, Souvik sohamsa , " B Lakshmi Ramesh " <b_lakshmi_ramesh wrote: > > Om Gurave Namah > > Dear Sarbani, > > Around 60kms from Tirupati, there is a place called Surutpalli, where > Shiva is worshipped as " Tatpurusha " . Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Namaste Souvik ji, That's very interesting!! I have not visited Tarapith, but shall certainly do so on my next visit to West Bengal. In surutpalli, Mother is seen as pressing the throat of Mahadeva, so that the poison stops there, thereafter She could have suckled Shiva in a bid to revive Him, so perhaps Tarapith celebrates a sequel to Surutpalli. That's a lovely image that you've invoked of Mother...perhaps now I truly understand the statement " bhojyeshu maata " ...that a wife is also the mother when she serves food to husband. I think the same message is conveyed in the image of Shiva taking alms from Annapoorneshwari. Regards, Lakshmi sohamsa , " Souvik Dutta " <explore_vulcan wrote: > > Dear Lakshmiji, > > Maybe you have not visited Tarapith.
