Guest guest Posted December 20, 2005 Report Share Posted December 20, 2005 Swee, I dont know if this is the normal method but we south indian brahmins do japa 108 and then when we come to meru the double bead we turn it around and start all over. meru parvat is not to be crossed. I know for sure that muslims and jews do the same way too. I dont know anything about others in India. Guest guest Posted December 20, 2005 Report Share Posted December 20, 2005 Jaya Jagnnatha Dear Asha, Namaste My understanding of the Japa Mala is that the Large centre bead represents Radha & Krishna therefore it is recommended to reverse direction when chanting, so as not to cross Radha & Krishna out of respect. The next 8 beads represent the 8 principal Gopis as the inner circle. The remaining 100 beads represents the next circle of Gopis. Further, Vaishnavs will tell you that the best way to get close to Krishna is by the blessings of Srimati Radha Rani, and of course the Gopis can take you there too – hence the japa on 108 beads. I have seen people chanting on their fingers and clickers/counters, but as far as I know it is preferable to chant on Tulasi beads. Anyway, that’s my understanding.
