Though I asked many people what the connection is with this particular day(Shukla Ashtami before Holi) and Goddess Annapoorna, I wasn't able to find out. Just as I was about to write this mail, someone called up and told me that .....on this day Goddess Parvati first appeared as Goddess Annapoorna. There was no food in the world and Lord Shiva himself went to the Goddess to take bhiksha (alms) for food. The puja done on this day is ....worshipping anna (food) and chulha (stove). It is done more in western India. It starts from Saptmi night and ends with Anna Daan on Ashtami. Sanjayji, please add to the above information. Also, thanks a lot for the links in your mail.
