Guest guest
Om Gurave Namah Dear Prabodh, Namaste. Thanks for sharing the Brahmotsavam photographs with us. Ramesh and i very much enjoyed going through them. We too have clicked many pictures of Garuda seva and will upload them soon. I will definitely share whatever little I know about the various features of these brahmotsavams. Brahmotsavams at Tirumala are supposed to have been started by Lord Brahma and are held every year to commemorate the day the Lord appeared on “sravana nakshatra” day in aswayuja maasa. Please visit the following link(s) to learn exhaustively about Sri Vaari brahmotsavam. http://www.tirumala.org/utsavams_brahmo_schedule.htm http://sify.com/samacharreligion/festivals/tirumalabrahmotsavam/index.php However, I would like to mention a few things which are not found at the above link. This time, Garuda Seva, which is performed on the 5th day , was attended by a record number of more than 3 lakh devotees. Garuda Seva is supposed to be the most important seva because only on that day, Malayappa, the utsava murthy is decorated with the priceless ornaments like sahasramaala, makara kanthi etc which adorn the main deity. On this day 9 ceremonial umbrellas are offered by an umbrella making company in Chennai. These are brought in a procession from Chennai and 2 of the umbrellas are offered at Tiruchanoor, where goddess Padmavathi holds fort. Floral garlands from Sri Villiputtur are brought and offered to the Lord. Vishnuchitta, the father of Goda devi, is supposed to be an incarnation of Garuda, worshipped the Lord there. We have gone to the Garuda seva and it was tremendous as well as terrible. It was a humbling revelation to watch the simple faith of the thousands of people, especially villagers. They never seemed to mind the personal discomfort, parked as they are in the open for days together. There was such adoration and anticipation on their faces, and as the Lord rode into view and cries of swami… govinda filled the night. Lakhs of hands went up in prayer and supplication and it was an awesome and intensely moving sight.
