Namaste Frank,

I'm going to refer you to the Introduction (Chapter 1) of COVA as a general

read on this topic of Vimshottari and Astottari dasa. I am also going to

refer you to Lesson #8 and it is really worth spending time on that lesson

and answering the questions on your own chart. That lesson contains some

excellent fundamental knowledge on Vimshottari dasa and its many variations.

I assure you that you will find the knowledge to be very valuable and it has

immediate application in predictive astrology.

Gurudev tells us that Vimshottari dasa (120 years) and Astottari dasa (108

years), as nakshatra based dasas, have universal application. He goes on to

say that other nakshatra based dasas suffer a number of limitations and lack

universal application. Many are for specific application are require special

conditions to be applied. Vimshottari is a Phalita based dasa and Astottari

is " the best nakshatra based Ayur dasa. "

He goes on to tell us that " the ududasas are very helpful in pinpointing the

event while it occurrence will require confirmation from a Rasi dasa. "

Now Vimshottari dasa can be initiated from Jamna, Lagna, Kshema, Utpanna or

Adhana stars, and the correct choice of the starting nakshatra will yield

better results in making predictions. I regard this to be very important in

the application of Vimshottari dasa and I guarntee you will be satisfied with

experimentation.

Now there are many Rasi based dasas (Narayana dasa, Chara dasa, Drig dasa,

Shoola dasa, Sudasa, etc) and I recommend you become adept in using Narayana

dasa for predictive purposes, at least initially. It can be applied to the

rasi as well as each of the Varga charts, depending on the nature of the

inquiry. You have already done wonderful work in applying this to your own

chart. Later on, or concurrently, you can use some of the other Rasi dasas

for special applications.

Now, how are we to work on 2 to 3 dasas on the same chart. How do we deal

with confusion or contradiction from the use of different dasas. This is a

very important question! Well, first of all we have to make sure we apply all

the fundamental rules, for if we are not clear on the rules then we might

well convince ourselves that contradictions exist whereas in fact our

evaluation may not be complete. I recommend that you read Laghu Parasari

Sidhant. We must understand the dharmic relationship between planets to

evaluate dasaphala, yoga phala, karaka phala, etc. Evaluating the

relationship/sambhanda between the dasa lord and antara dasa lord is an art

in itself but also very scientific, and must also be applied to the relevant

varga charts.

My approach is to evaluate the results of a dasa and forget about any other

dasa that I have previously applied to that chart. I " compartmentalize " , a

word that has become popular here in Washington, DC. Then when I come to my

conclusion(s) I compare results of each dasa system. Generally, they support

each other.

In your chart Astottari dasa gave very good results in a previous exercise we

went through in September. It was very accurate in describing some events in

your life, as I recall. I use Astottari as a general dasa, when it qualifies

for a chart.

I have answered other questions below!

Regards,

Brendan

THIS IS CORRECT.

YES, BOTH HAVE MERIT. I AM NOW IN THE HABIT OF USING ASTOTTARI DASA WHEN IT

APPLIES. I LIKE THE RESULTS.

> 2. Other than longevity, does Ashottari indicate anything about the

> individual in question ? does Vimsottari?

EVALUATION OF THE NATAL CHART AND VARGA CHARTS TELL US THAT WHICH IS PROMISED

IN THE LIFE OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN QUESTION = STATIC ANALYSIS.

USE OF DASA TELLS US WHEN THAT WHICH IS PROMISED FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL IS GOING

TO MANIFEST = DASAPHAL AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS. PARASARA TEACHES THAT

VIMSHOTTARI IS THE BEST UDUDASA IN KALIYUGA AND HAS ADVISED ITS USE FOR ALL

PURPOSES.

I USE ASTOTTARI DASA WHEN IT APPLIES AND I BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE CORRECT

APPROACH. GURUDEV TELLS US THAT ASTOTTARI WILL APPLY IN 25% OF CHARTS AND

VIMSHOTTARI IN 75% CASES.

NARAYANA IS A GENERAL PHALITA RASI DASA AND SHOULD BE USED ON ALL CHARTS FOR

GENERAL PREDICTIVE WORK. THERE ARE SPECIFIC RASI DASAS FOR OTHER TOPICS...

DISEASE, LONGEVITY, SPIRITUALITY, ETC.

ALL DASAS ARE RELEVANT BUT MUST BE USED WITH INTELLIGENCE, KEEPING IN MIND

ALWAYS THE GOAL OF YOUR WORK.

IN SUMMARY, I WILL SAY THE FOLLOWING: USE VIMSHOTTARI OR ASTOTTARI AS

GENERAL NAKSHATRA BASED DASAS. USE NARAYANA DASA AS A GENERAL RASI DASA.

PRACTICE WITH THESE DASAS WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH EXCELLENT PREDICTIVE TOOLS IN

JYOTISHA.

Namaste Rajesh,

re: Ashtottari Dasa v. other Dasa systems

Did you get an answer to my inauary that I did not see?

I still am puzzled over this , that is:

SubjectChoosing the right ( or complementary dasa ) i.e. Vimshottri ( 120 yr) or Ashtottari ( 108 yr)Rule For Ashtottari: a. If birth is daytime in Krishna Paksha or night in Sukla Paksha b. if Rahu is in a quadrant or trine from Paka Lagna (sign occupied by Lagna Lord) c. if a +b = True, then use Ashtottari - in my chart this is true. Now the inquiry1. Using Ashtottari dasa, does Vimsottari have any merit or use once confirming that Ashtottari Dasa is the one to be used? If yes, how so? 2. Other than longevity, does Ashottari indicate anything about the individual in question ? does Vimsottari?3. Does Narayan Dasa system apply to both i.e. if one dasa system is used due to applying the correct rules given by Sage Parashara, do other dasa systems become irrelevant or less useful? If so which ones, or what are the rules to be followed? ( 108 yr)

~~~~~~~OM GURAVE NAMAH~~~~~~~
Dear Rajesh,
Everything is not black and white. Although I have tried to make it as
scientific as possible. Astottari is definitely better than Vimsottari in
Ayur calculations, but that does not mean that Vimsottari will fail in Ayur
calculations. Ududasa are dasa's of the mind level and can tell a skilled
astrologer many tales of what is to be expected and what is likely to
happen. Rasi dasa like Narayana Dasa are necessary to confirm the same. So,
take one dasa and try to master it. Then take another and master it. You
must learn each dasa and try to master as many as you can. This will
increase your depth of the subject, understanding and grasp.
Why is astottari better for Ayus? [108 years is the age for most Ayur dasa
while 120 years is the age for most Phalita Dasa. Narayana dasa although
having a maximum of 144 years is on a base of 120 years. This base is used
in compression.]
Blessings
Sanjay RAth
