I have been reading the responses. The analysis on Sanjay's

chart by Steve, Karu and others is very impressive. Steve's

comments are particularly brilliant.

Prakaasana avastha is a very good and saattwik avastha.

With Jupiter (lagna and 10th lord - self and conduct in

society), Moon (5th lord - scholarship and intelligence),

Venus (3rd and 8th lord - communication, hard work and

occult studies) and Ketu (9th lord in 10th - dharma and

karma) being in Prakaasana avastha, he is a blessed and

saattwik person. The only badly placed planet is Rahu in

Aagama avastha in the 4th, suggesting lack of comfort.

Now, I will make more comments.

Though Parasara gave some standard readings for different

planets in different avasthas, he later made some comments

on the impact of houses. That should make it clear that

those readings are only for guidance and not absolute (like

everything else in Jyotish). You should use the standard

results to understand the meaning of different avasthas.

I will give a simple example from Sanjay's chart. Take

Saturn, who is in Sayana avastha (lying down/resting). Is

it good or bad?

That depends on the aspect we are interested in. Saturn is

atma karaka (AK). He signifies the soul of the native. As

he is in Sayana avastha, Saturn is like a man who is lying

down and relaxing. That is an excellent state for AK. If

one's soul is like a relaxed man, what more can we ask

for? That shows a blessed soul that is at peace. Some

people (including me) may sometimes be concerned that

Sanjay is being spoilt by the praise and recognition, but

that cannot be true. Sanjay has a blessed soul that is

relaxed and peaceful.

You can find the same thing in Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's

chart. AK is Rahu in his chart. Rahu and his other half

Ketu are both in Sayana avastha. This may not be

considered good on its own. However, AK in Sayana avastha

shows a blessed and peaceful soul that is like a man lying

down and resting. Bill Clinton and Fidel Castro are both

successful and very intelligent leaders, but they both

have AK in Nidra avastha (sleeping) and their souls are

like a man who is sleeping. My father is a very simple

person, but he has AK Sun in lagna in Prakaasana avastha

(shining) and he has an exalted soul.

Now, can we conclude that Saturn's Sayana avastha is good

for Sanjay? Well, Saturn is also the 11th lord in 11th.

When we talk about material gains, a planet that is like a

man lying down and resting is not really the best. If a

planet connected with 11th is in a raajasik (energetic)

state like Kautuka avastha (eager) or Nrityalipsa avastha

(longing to dance), that will result in better gains.

Just as what is good for a saint can be bad for a Prime

Minister and the behavior that is good for a Prime

Minister can be wrong for a saint, an avastha that is

good for AK can be not-quite-good for the 11th lord and

vice versa. We must remember this when quoting results

from classics. Results in classics are for only guidance.

Like everything else in Jyotish, the concept of Sayanaadi

avasthas gives good results only if applied intelligently.

Rather than teaching some standard procedures and

thumbrules, I want to get you thinking. One can learn

only by thinking.

Identify the different things that a planet stands for in

a chart and analyze the meaning of its avastha w.r.t.

each thing. Don't be hasty!!

One finishing comment: When you consider a saint's chart,

AK's avastha can be used as a factor in birthtime

rectification. For example, Adi Sankara's AK is also Saturn

and he is in Prakaasana avastha. Considering he had a soul

that radiated light in the whole of India (which was to

last millennia!), it makes sense. Swami Vivekananda had AK

Sun in Sabhaa avastha. That shows soul that is like a man

who is contributing at an assembly. Swami Narasimha Bharati

was one of the greatest pontiffs at Kanchi Kama Koti

Peetham and he has AK Saturn in Prakaasana avastha. Again

that shows a detached (Saturn) soul that radiates light to

last a long time. Buddha's horoscope given by Dr. Raman has

AK Sun in Nidra avastha (sleeping). It is probably wrong.

Meher Baba's horoscope has AK Mars in Bhojana avastha. In

a raajasik state like bhojana (eating), AK does not suggest

a blessed soul who found the Truth. If the chart given by

Dr. Raman is accurate, then the comments of Dr. Raman

belittling and questioning the status of Meher Baba as a

saint may be valid. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's chart given

by Dr. Raman may be accurate, because AK Rahu and Ketu are

in Sayana avastha (lying down/relaxing).

We were looking at Avastha from Avastha point. As you said that is wrong. The following quotes from your mail will apply to all lessons and Joytish students must keep in mind forever.

".....those readings are only for guidance and not absolute (likeeverything else in Jyotish)...."

".....Identify the different things that a planet stands for ina chart and analyze the meaning of its avastha w.r.t.each thing....."(Here Avastha, but in general any Jyotish concept)

One more question in Avastha, how to interpret Netrapaani Avastha (Eyes and Hands)? Is it like Observation and action? Like, if Venus in Netrapaani Avastha will give result in artistic ability.

By the by, are the Avastha, Narayana dasa calculations included in the Main Jagannath Hora software?
