Guest guest
Jaya Jagannath! Dear Jyotisha, I have written an article which I will sent to Sarad for jyotish news( if it is appropriate one). Since I have been inspired with this Guruji assignment, I am forwarding it here, for the benefit of all those who had difficulties in understanding the lagna assignment: Here it is: THE ROLE OF LAGNA Lagna or ascendent is a sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. In jyotisha lagna is given a very important role, while sun sign is treated as not as significant as in western system of astrology. The reason is simple. During 24 hours, 12 signs rise on the eastern horizon, and millions of creatures are born.(Sage Satyacharya). Among the houses lagna is treated as both kendra and kona, thus lord of lagna is known as lagnesh, and it is always Yog Karak or favourable graha. Among the kendras, Lagna is Brahma, on the lotus born, the Father of all Creation. Thus, both practically and methaphysically, lagna is among the most important houses in the kundhali. Sign or rashi that is placed in lagna is responsible for the life of a person. It is its lord that assumes the lordship of the lagna, and represents the embodiment of Atma in this ever-changing world of phenomena. Lagna is satya or the truth. The truth is that we are all mortal and have to be reborn to live out our karma, until we take shelter at the feet of the Lord in a moksha state signified by 12 house, which is a house of loss . This house negates Lagna, and signifies the end of reincarnation, and embodiment that takes place in lagna. Lagna lord may occupy different places and carries its energy into a certain field. There it applies its karmic seed, which result in karma application, signified by paka lagna. Its image(arudha) is responsible for direction taken in this life time, which is contrary to satya( the truth). Thus projection of lagnesh is a real Maya, or illusion that each soul has to suffer until moksha is reached. The rising degree of lagna may occupy different divisions, which are ruled by different Deitys responsible for guiding soul through various phases of life and existence. However, the purpose of this article is to gain perspective of quite specific features, physical, mental and more subtle aspects of each lagna. In this God’s creation, nothing happens by accident. So, the birth under some lagna mirrors the tendencies our soul carries from birth to birth. The readers may see that there are various books(both modern and classic) describing the features of each lagna such as physical appearance, mentality, likes or dislikes etc.. However, it is very important to properly understand, the logic underlying these descriptions. The recent assignment on Varahamihira list helped me ponder deeply into these matters. Some starters for proper understanding of Lagna follow: 1. Consider the rashi that occupies lagna. It may be movable/dual/fixed. It may be fiery, watery etc.. Each rashi is assigned a specific dosha such as vata/pitta/kapha. Each rashi is ruled by a certain guna, such as satwa/rajas/tamas. It may reside in various places, in various directions. It has a certain symbol and shape, as well as its height. It rises either backwards or with its head, or both ways. So all these information are essential for understanding the features of each lagna. These information may be found in classic texts of jyotisha. 2. Consider the lagnesh(lagna lord). There are 9 grahas that rule each rashi. The features of graha ruling lagna rashi are strongly pronounced within the native. 3. Consider the relationships of other grahas ruling various houses from lagna. For example, aries lagna people are generally idealistic, free spirited and naturally religious due to saggitarius placement in 9th house of dharma, as well as Guru, a significator of religion and high ideals ruling 9th house. Of course, these features are under the strong influence of guru position in the certain chart, and may modify easily depending on the guru placement. However, for general purposes, this statement stands true. Or another example: Libra lagna people tend to like active and energetic partners, due to mars ruling its 7th house. Saturn and Rahu ruling 5th house turns them philosophical minded, and often gives bitter experiences with children. At the same time, capricorn placement in 4th house may give unhappiness in family life and tendencies towards an antique furniture. Therefore, each relationship should be carefully studied. You may also exand this by adding exaltation/debilitation places. For example, mars is debilitated in cancer, and meena lagna people tend to be over emotional towards their children(sign cancer in 5th) while due to natural debilitation of mars therein, they may also quickly lose their patience with children, due to their oversensitivity. On the contrary, mars exaltation in 11th house, may give them tremendous energy for their life goals and desire fullfilment. 4. Regarding physical appearance, lagna stands for head, second house for face etc. Therefore, both rashi and graha should be examined for physical outlook. Taurus lagna may have double chin, due to sign gemini placed in 2nd house, as well as affliction of mercury(overeating) Cancer lagna may have roundish head, due to moon ruling lagna. Complexion of the native is seen through various colours assigned to grahas and rashis. For example saturnine signs in 10th house ruling eyes, may give blue eyes, while dhanu and meena placement in 10th house may give honey-coloured eyes. Watery signs, in 11th house of calves may give stout lower legs, and so on... It is very important to examine each lagna carefully, having in mind all grahas and signs. As jyotishas, we should never blindly acquire knowledge from books, but think deeply, looking for the causes and logical explanations, searching for a wholistic and unifying picture.
