I shall narrate to you the

Essence of the Gita mentioned to Arjuna formerly. A person who practices Yoga

and its eight components has mastered vedÄntic lore.

परो नानà¥à¤¯ अतà¥à¤®à¤¦à¥‡à¤¹à¤¾à¤¦à¤¿à¤µà¤°à¥à¤œà¤¿à¤¤à¤ƒà¥¤

हीनरूपादिदेहानà¥à¤¤à¤ƒ

करणतà¥à¤µà¤¾à¤¦à¤¿à¤²à¥‹à¤šà¤¨à¤ƒà¥¥à¥¨à¥©à¥­à¥¤à¥¨

ÄtmalÄbhaḥ paro nÄnya

atmadehÄdivarjitaḥ|

The realisation of Ätman is

the only great asset and nothing else, the Ätman devoid of physical body. It is

also divested of form, colour and of the gross body, mind, eyes and the rest

(etc.,)

nÄhamÄtmÄ ca duḥ khÄdisaá¹sÄrÄdisamanvayÄt||237|3

 

Prana is devoid of

knowledge. In deep slumber ‘I’ (the knowledge of the Self) is seen. This cannot

be the real Ätman since the existing Man is in conjunction with misery and

worldly bondage.

दीपà¥à¤¤à¤¾à¤°à¥à¤šà¤¿à¤°à¤¾à¤¦à¥€à¤¤à¥à¤¯ इव दीपà¥à¤¤à¤¿à¤®à¤¾à¤¨à¥à¥¤

Just like the smokeless

blazing fire; like the lighting in the sky, the Ätman shines in the inner

heart.

The ears cannot see

themselves or the Ätman, but the Soul of the Omniscient – the onlooker of All

sees them.

The Ätman is self

illuminary. Due to its contact, the sin is dissipated and knowledge arises in

the individual soul in the manner of the screen that appears to be blazing when

a light burns nearby.

By pervading (the cluster of)

sense organs with the mind and by fixing the mind in the ego, the ego in the

intellect and the intellect in the Prakåti, the Prakåti in the Puruña and the

Puruña in the Brahman, one realsies “I am Brahman, the great light†and

realising this, one becomes liberated.

The body is like a house

with nine doors (of the external apertures); Three presiding Deities (of the

Three Guëas) and the Five Witnesses are the Five Sense Organs.

The Supreme presiding officer

is the Kñetrajïa (Soul).

He who knows this

thoroughly, is the excellent poet (Sage) Kavi (or KrÄntadarÅ›in).

Thousands of horse

sacrifices and hundreds of VÄjapeya

sacrifices do not even equal the merits of one sixteenth part of JïÄna

Yajïa (the fire rites of knowledge).

सà¥à¤¥à¤¾à¤ªà¥à¤¯ पà¥à¤°à¥à¤·à¤‚ बà¥à¤°à¤¹à¥à¤®à¤£à¤¿ नà¥à¤¯à¤¸à¥‡à¤¤à¥à¥¥à¥¨à¥©à¥­à¥¤à¥§à¥¦

ahaá¹ kÄraá¹ tathÄ buddhau

buddhiá¹ ca praká¹›tÄvapi|

praká¹›tiá¹ puruá¹£e sthÄpya puruá¹£aá¹ brahmaṇi

nyaset||237|10

 

By pervading (the cluster

of) sense organs with the mind and by fixing the mind in the ego, the ego in

the intellect and the intellect in the Prakåti, the Prakåti in the Puruña and

the Puruña in the Brahman, one realsies “I am Brahman, the great light†and

realising this, one becomes liberated.

जà¥à¤¯à¥‹à¤¤à¤¿à¤ƒ पà¥à¤°à¤¸à¤‚खà¥à¤¯à¤¾à¤¯ विमà¥à¤šà¥à¤¯à¤¤à¥‡à¥¤

paraá¹ jyotiḥ prasaá¹khyÄya vimucyate|

navadvÄramidaá¹ gehaá¹ tisṛṇÄá¹ paá¹£casÄká¹£ikam||237|11

 

The body is like a house

with nine doors (of the external apertures); Three presiding Deities (of the

Three Guëas) and the Five Witnesses are the Five Sense Organs.

सरà¥à¤µà¤¾à¤£à¤¿ कलां नारà¥à¤¹à¤¨à¥à¤¤à¤¿ षोचà¥à¤¶à¥€à¤®à¥à¥¥à¥¨à¥©à¥­à¥¤à¥§à¥¨

ká¹£etrajá¹£Ädhiṣṭhitaá¹ vidvÄnyo veda sa varaḥ kaviḥ|

aÅ›vamedhasahasrÄṇi vÄjapeyaÅ›atÄni ca|

já¹£Änayajá¹£asya sarvÄṇi kalÄá¹ nÄrhanti á¹£ocśīm||237|12

 

The Supreme presiding

officer is the Kñetrajïa (Soul).

He who knows this

thoroughly, is the excellent poet (Sage) Kavi (or KrÄntadarÅ›in).

Thousands of horse

sacrifices and hundreds of VÄjapeya

sacrifices do not even equal the merits of one sixteenth part of JïÄna

Yajïa (the fire rites of knowledge).
