Hare Rama Krishna

Namaste Gauranga Das,

Astragalus is a Chinese herb and is not used in Ayurveda as I understant it.

It is popular here in the U.S. as a general booster of the immune system,

although I have never used it. I just use Ayurvedic herbs in my practice. It

is a tonic & rejuvenative herb and is said to be sattvic. The indications

that I read suggest it reduces Vata and increases Pitta.

The latin name is Astragalus Membranaceus and the Chinese name is Huang Qi.

Its primary action on the organs is on the spleen and lungs. It is diuretic

and stops sweating. It strengthens energy and builds resistance to colds,

flus, weakness and disease. Good for wasting and exhausting diseases. It is

especially good for the lungs and excellent for effects of chemotherapy and

radiation, as is Ashwaghanda (even scientific research indicates this!).

From its indications is sound very much like Ayurvedic Ashwaghanda and it

might be an equivalent, although no two herbs have the same effects. I am not

able to say anything about its energetic nature according to Ayurvedic

principles - rasa (taste), virya (energy), vipak (post-digestive effect), and

prabhava (special potency) since it is not listed in Ayurvedic Materia Medica.

Planet: Weakness, exhaustion, poor recuperative power, lungs, weak digestion,

proneness to disease, wasting diseases... all suggest weak Agni, high Vayu

tattwa = Saturn or high Vata in general.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Brendan
