Shri Brahmadaru Smarami

Dear Lakshmi,

Just back in Delhi after a long pilgrimage which began on 8th February! The penance of Shivaratri is to cleanse our sins, and who better then the Blue-Throated One to drink our poisons? The penance begins with a fast without water, which stretches for long hours. So your last meal would be dinner on day 1 and then you break the fast on the morning of day 3. On the night of Shivaratri you perform his puja in each prahara. Hence there are four pujas. Bathing Shiva is an essential component of this ritual. In the 1st prahara you bathe him with milk, in the 2nd with ghee, in the 3rd with curd and in the 4th with honey. Once you finish the puja and you are waiting for the next prahara to commence, you spend the time chanting and singing hymns and songs of Shiva. The 4th prahara ends on the morning of day 3 when you break your fast.

Most people break their fast after performing the puja during the 1st prahara which will be in the evening of Shivaratri. I hope this is simple enough!

Best Regards,

Sarbani

Other than fasting and chanting, what else do people usually do?What FORM of Lord Shiva is taken for worship on this day,I mean if one has a affintity for Lord SHiva in a peticulair form, is it ok, to chant those names, prayers?thanks,Lakshmisohamsa , "shrupata" <shrupata wrote:>> II Om Datta Guru II> > Dear Members,> > I'm taking us slightly off of Jyotish for one moment because > today is MahaShivaratri (Feb 26), Lord Shiva's favorite day of the > entire year.
