I am new on the conference, thanks to my Jyotish Guru Dina-natha Prabhu and would like to start my study with a prayer to Mother Sarasvati which I received some time ago from a very nice devotee. If somebody could provide me the translation, I would be very happy with that. I have been away from the list for almost a month , happened to see a few messages only two days ago and yours caught my attention right away. But as I happened to be a " telugu " speaking person and don't have much sanskrit language , I was hoping and waiting to see whether any of the fellow members who have better knowledge of sanskrit would come forward and explain.. Today I happened to see the post sanjay forwarded.I took the bait and hint , as he hoped :-) and here I am.. what I know is very little ..whether it is my language or astrology or any other matters to be truthful..But what ever I know I will gladly share..the book I could find gave only a general meaning for the sloekam . So I talked to some one and got the rest and giving it to you...Before I give the meaning I would like to request you to learn the pronunciation of all the relevant words as clearly as possible.. Then you can feel the beauty and energy of the words in a better way.. As you can see the sloekam I wrote has a few corrections and changes here and there..At some places they have long sounds, some has different case of letters like capital S,L,R,N,D, which has distinctive sounds..I don't know how to explain all of them but for couple of them I can give the words with those sounds.. S is as in Sara ...not as in saraswati D as in David meanings... yaa - who kumda -- jasmine imdu ( i is as in it ) -- moon tushaara .... snow haara .... garland or necklace ( a pearl necklace is being referred here for its whiteness ) dhavaLaa .... white Subhra -- white vastraaavRtaa ( vastra+ aavRtaa) .. (addressing) vastra - cloth aavRta-- surrounded/ wearing (in a rough sense) veeNaa ... lute vara damDa.. vara=great damDa = a special rod/staff mamDita -- adorned with, kara= hand karaa (part of addressing) Svaeta = white padma =lotus aasana= throne/seat (svae--long sound) brahma/acyuta/ Samkara= trinity of Gods prabhRti bhi: -- etc..also daevai:- by deities sadaa=always vamditaa- one who is saluted saa= she maam = me ( as in bless me) paatu= protect sarasvatee/ bhagavatee= feminine form of bhagavaan ( one who has six kinds of qualities) niSSAesha ( nir+ Saesha) + jaadya+ apahaa (addressing ) Saesha=remainder niSSAesha = with out leaving any thing jaaDya = ignorance apaha= one who removes dhavaLaa/karaa/aavRtaa/aasanaa/ etc.. are used in long form as she was being addressed with those adjectives.... one who is white as jasmine flower, moon, snow, pearl necklace, one who is adorned by (/ wears) a white cloth (Saree) One whose hands are adorned by a " veeNa " which is like a great " damDam " one who has the white lotus as her seat/throne one who is always saluted by Brahma, vishNu , Siva and other deities (daevaas ) one who removes all the ignorance with out leaving even a trace of it may she / that saraswati, bhagavati protect me .... I tried to give you as much info. as I could to make the meaning clear....If there are are any mistakes...I sincerely hope others will come forward and correct them . One more thing..I hope you don't mind my saying ...I believe the mantra you wrote also should have been Om, aim, sreem Sree saraswatai namah since the mantra has the powerful beejaaksharaas , I feel it is a must you say them the right way to get the proper results....along with devotion if we could do the things the right way it helps.. Last note ....even in the saraswatee gaayatree mamtra ..the one sanjay started the lesson with , there are certain places sounds should be long ..instead of the way it was transliterated.... Om paavakaa nah sarasvatee vaajaebhirvaajineevatee yaj~nam vastu dhiyaavasuh I was told that happens to be one of the sixteen sloekaas of a special prayer to saraswati called " Sree saraswatee sooktam " May mother saraswati give us all the knowledge we desire and seek.. I humbly accept that my transliteration is based on simple placement of letters to sound like the original, but is not correct as the correct system had been given earlier by Narasimha. I have not studied this and this goes into big and small letters for different Sanskrit sounds. Dhira Krsna Prabhu will also appreciate my point that what he had given was very wrong as the words 'bhirdaevai' were missing.
