Lagna Kendradi Graha Dasa or MOOLA DASA Introduction Lagna Kendradi Graha Dasa, also known as the Moola Dasa (Refer: Saravali of Kalyan Verma), is one of the very important dasa systems of Vedic astrology. 'Lagna' means the ascendant, 'Kendra' means the quadrants/Cadent houses and 'Adi ' means the “the others” which includes Panapara (Succeedent signs 2nd, 5th, 8th & 11th) and Apoklimas (Precedent signs 3rd, 6th, 9th & 12th). This dasa is vital in that it gives the results of the past life Karma that every individual has to face in the form of suffering or blessing, depending on the Karma. As the name suggests the dasa begins from the Lagna or any other Kendra, whichever is stronger and has planet(s) disposited in them, and is succeeded by the other Kendra’s (having planet(s) in it) according to their strengths. After completing the periods of the planets in the quadrants, the dasa shifts to the planets in the four signs in the Panapara and then to the Apoklimas. However, the following rules apply in deciding which sets of houses - the Panapara or Apoklimas succeed the initial dasa of the planets in the quadrants.1. If the Lagna is an odd sign, the dasa of the planets in the Panapara( 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th ) follow the dasa of the Kendra’s.2. If the Lagna is an even sign, the dasa of the planets in the Apoklimas (Precedent signs 3rd, 6th, 9th & 12th) follow the dasa of the Kendra’s.3. If Saturn is in the Lagna, then irrespective of whether the Lagna is odd or even, the dasa of the planets in the Kendra signs will be followed by the dasa of the planets in the Panapara (2nd, 5th, 8th & 11th).4. If Ketu is in Lagna, then irrespective of whether the Lagna is odd or even, the dasa of the planets in the Kendra signs will be followed by the dasa of the planets in the Apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th & 12th). Sequence of the Dasa In determining the sequence of the dasa of the planets, their relative strengths are to be studied as per standard rules. Among the four signs being considered (i.e. of the Kendra, Panapara or Apoklimas), the strongest is the one associated with the Atmakaraka. If the Atmakaraka is not so placed, then the sign with the larger number of planets is stronger. (The strength of a Rasi is determined on the basis of principles explained later under “Sources of strength") If only one planet is placed in the sign, then it shall give its dasa. If more than one planet is placed in the sign, then the planet with the highest longitude shall have the first dasa, followed by the planet with the next higher longitude and so on. Period of the Dasa Count the number of signs from there to its Moolatrikona sign and subtract the number arrived at by 1. This period is to be subtracted from the number of Vimsottari Dasa years assigned to the planet. The net result arrived at indicates the number of years of Moola Dasa/Lagna Kendradi Graha Dasa assigned to the planet. Rider 1:Add one year to the final sum if the said planet is exalted and subtract one if the planet is in debilitation. Rider2: For the purposes of this Dasa, the count for Rahu & Ketu shall be reckoned to Aquarius and Scorpio respectively as is done in Narayana Dasa. In case the number of years to be subtracted and the number of years under the Vimsottari scheme are the same wherein the final figure would be zero, then take the full cycle of years under the Vimsottari dasa as the number of Moola dasa years of the said planet in the first cycle. Similarly, calculate the dasa years for the other planets in all the Kendra’s, Panapara and Apoklimas. After, having completed the exercise for all the nine planets, the balance years remaining from the first cycle (Param Ayus of man is for 120 years - so it is 120 minus the total Moola dasa years of all nine planets in the first cycle) for each of the planet works in the same order during the second cycle. [Note: The degrees of Rahu and Ketu are taken as they are and not from the reverse as is the usual case in determining their degrees]. For example: Take a case where the Lagna is Gemini and Venus, Mars and Rahu are disposited in it, where Venus being the Atmakaraka is the strongest followed by Mars and Rahu. The Moola Dasa will begin from Gemini (as it is the strongest) and from Venus in particular as it is the strongest. Count the number of signs from Gemini to Libra (the Moolatrikona sign of Venus) - it is 5. As stated above, it will be 5-1 = 4 and 20 years (Sukra Mahadasa period) minus 4 = 16 years. The first dasa will be that of Venus for 16years followed by Mars and then by Rahu (being lesser in degrees). In case of Rahu, the Moolatrikona sign will be Aquarius while for Ketu, it will be Scorpio. [Lesson: In Phalita Dasa Rahu's debility will be in Sagittarius and in Ayur Dasa, its debility will be in Scorpio, while the reverse i.e., Gemini and Taurus, will be true in the case of Ketu]. Let us study the horoscope of Bhagwan Shri Ram as an example and determine the periods and significance of Moola Dasa in his life. RASI: Lagna, Jupiter & Moon in Cancer; Saturn ® Libra; Mars-Capricorn; Rahu- Sagittarius; Venus- Pisces; Sun-Aries;Mercury-Taurus; Ketu-Gemini. The Moola Dasa of Bhagwan Shri Ram began from Moon in the following manner: 1. Jupiter - Janma2. Moon - Shiksha & Janaki Vivaha, and3. Mars - Diksha (by Vishwamitra)4. Saturn - Dandakaranya (Vanvas)5. Sun - Simhasana6. Venus - Mantra Pada (Sita is banished and birth of sons - Luv & Kush)7. Rahu - End of all Rakshasha/demons8. Ketu - Establishment of 'Eka Patni Dharma' in the world9. Mercury - Dharma (establishment of dharma in the world) Jupiter dasa - 16 yrs. - (6-1) +1 = 10 yearsMoon dasa - 10 yrs. - (11-1) = 10 yearsMars dasa - 07 yrs. - (4-1) +1 = 03 yearsSaturn dasa - 19 yrs - (5-1) +1 = 14 yearsSun dasa - 06 yrs. - (5-1) +1 = 01 yearSukra dasa - 20 yrs. - (8-1) +1 = 12 yearsRahu dasa - 18 yrs. - (3-1) -1 = 17 yearsKetu dasa - 07 yrs. - (6-1) –1 = 03 yearsMercury dasa- 17 yrs. - (5-1) = 13 years Thus, the Moola Dasa system is arrived at and it will be seen that this is the only Dasa system that explains the Vanvas (Rama was banished to the Dandaranyaka) for 14 years and that too exactly from the 24 year of His life as recorded in the scriptures. Thus when the Maharishi’s say that this period of Sani Dasa was for 14 years, they were referring to the Moola Dasa. Assignment 1. Guest guest
> Assignment > 1. Which Yoga/ planets have contributed to the undying fame of Bhagavan Sri Rama? Fame is something that is part of this illusory world, hence Arudha's matter a lot. AL shows how one is percieved by the world and A10 shows one's status in the society/world. Reckoned from both AL and A10 are the 4 Mahapurusha Yogas. As this is present from Lagna too...this may show that the Sri Rama was inherently/truely a Mahapurusha. Combined with the fact that Sun & Moon are very strong(Quadrants from Lagna, Arudha Lagna and A10) to sustain the yoga and hence his fame is undying. > 2. Explain the enemies of Sri Ram and which planets contribute to their rise and which planets contribute to their destruction? The 6H shows enemies. 6H has Rahu the planet of treachery and unconventionalism. So it can be inferred that the enemies of Sri Rama are powerful(Rahu a malefic, a Rakshasa) will give a tough time(being debilitated) but in the end will eventually be vanquished. Another way is to look at the A6 or the shatrupada. Its lord is SaR. Its exalted in 9H. It also happens to be the 12L. The lord of shatrupada has vitiated the 4H of domestic harmony. So Saturn can initially give good results for shatru but may prove disastrous in the end. 11H(Success) from A6 has debilitated Rh, which is why the demons signified by Rh came to end. Thus Ravana was killed during Saturns dasa. But the whole clan got wiped out in Rh dasa. > 3. Which is the single most important Dharma lesson taught by Sri Rama which has become the a rule for almost all religions? The Eka-Patni Dharma. Here's how: Venus the SthiraKaraka for spouse is in 9H exalted. The 9H is house of dharma and its houses the exalted Venus. In fact the 9L(Dharma) the 1L(Self) and Venus(Spouse) are in trines showing that they will be working towards the same dharma. Moreover A9 and UL are aspecting(Rasi Dristi) each other. Their lords is Mars and that happens to be posited in the 7H!!! Thus from Lagna and their Arudhas the Spouse/Self and Dharma are very well connected and posited, thus confirming the fact that while Sri Rama established this trend .... the world also followd/perceived it. > 4. What was the curse in past life or existence that Sri Rama had to suffer for? Show this curse in the birth chart and explain the remedial measure necessary. Curse may be of something related to debilitated Ketu in 12H. I am having difficulty here. > 5. Why was there so much gap between marriage and birth of children? Explain the twin birth and the place & circumstances of their birth. Marriage happened in Moon. Moon is 4L from AL(12 to 5th). Mars is 8L from AL. Saturn is a badhaka from AL and 6 and 7L from Leo. Moreover A5 in 12H from AL shows delay. Its aspected by deb. nodes. Venus is exalted in A5. Its aspected by Ketu showing twins. Its also in a dual sign. A5 and Venus is in 9H. So the twins may be born away from home. Pisces may show a river nearby. > 6. Explain Sooparnaka the sister of Ravana and her desire to marry Rama. How did this desire lead to the kidnapping of Sita and the end of Ravana? If A6 is Ravana. 3H from A6 in clockwise(Since Aq houses A6) direction i.e Ar is Sooorpanakha. Its lord is Mars. Arudha of Aries is in Cn, the ascendant of Sri Rama. This shows the desire of Soorpanakha. Cn houses 6L jupiter which is 12th to 7H(Sita) and hence shows separation(Kidnapping of Sita). SaR the 12L from A6 aspects Cn showing the destruction of Ravana. > 7. Why does Parasara give the planet " SUN " to represent Sri Rama? Because the establisher of dharma(Sri Rama) ascended throne during the dasa of Sun.
