Dear Divya,

Can you please tell me the Puranic story behind the festival. I

usually have not taken part in one such Puja and cannot say much. If

you tell the story behind the Puja then I can maybe help you with some

information.

There are two aspects to understand when a Puja is performed on a

Certain tithi,

1. Tithi Ruler itself,

In this case, The tithi is Ashtami Ruled by Rahu, The Diety for

Ashtami is Rudra or 8 Vasus. They eight vasus can be worshiped for

many reason. The underlying theme will be something related to 8th house.

2. The Tithi's Opposite Spoke in Kaalachakra. The Kaalachakra 8 spokes

indicate the 8 fold miseries or blockages due to time. The 8 Tithi

rulers take 8 spokes in Kaalchakra. The opposite spoke ruler can be

worshiped to remove blockages in Karma and Time.

These should give you enough clues to figure out all the Puja

performed on various Tithi.

Warm Regards

Dear Divya,

I can't add much substance to what Sanjay has stated but to say that

Durga puja is performed twice in a year, for nine days each time -

once during spring and then again during fall. Annapurna is one of

the 8 manifestations of Durga and each time Annapurna puja is on the

8th tithi, with Ram Navami and Vijayadashami being respective

culminations.

From what I know, the puja during spring is mostly a private, homely

affair, but you'll know the one preceding winter by the decibel

levels, especially if you're in Waste Bengal.

The springtime celebration is because Ram is said to have invoked

Durga during this time. I guess it's low-key because it was

considered somewhat untimely (akal bodhan).

So long,

Ramapriya
