My teacher Rameshwar Jha described to me in some detail how, having lost his scholarly debate with the brahmin orthodoxy of Benares, he was obliged to leave the sacred city. * Just because the Hindus already knew (some form of) astrology before does not necessarily imply that they did not borrow new concepts and schemas from the Greeks (as opposed to making them more receptive). If this futile controversy were not so symptomatic (for the patient bystanders here), on both sides, of the 'closure' of the brahmin mind, I'd have already suspended posting privileges long ago. Sunthar ------------------ Dear members, ? 1) Shri Mehrotra can contact?Indian National Science Academy. Or he can place an order on a bookseller for the book. If he thinks he must have the book let him get it. ? 2a) Rashis are not paroksha as rashis are mentioned in Purana. ? 2b) Mehrotra is?obsessed with Wilkinson's Parokshya knowledge.?Why is he hesitant to ask??Wilkinson?directly. ? 3 & 4) Why does Mehrotra not draw?his own conclusion??He appears to be?an intelligent person? ? 5) How can?one generalise that each and everything in the Puranas is suspect? Does he?think Dayanand saraswati tried to?destroy the sanctity of the Vedic literature? It is true that Dayanand Saraswati met Ramkrishna Paramhansa and later on Ramakrishna Paramhansa opined that Dayananda Saraswati was very proud of his knowledge. But I do not doubt?the honesty and integrity of Dayanada Saraswati. ? 6) I am not asking anybody to believe or not to believe in astrology. That is beside the point.?Nobody should sidetrack?the main issue. The purpose of my writings are to show that Astrology was known to the Indians from the times of the Mahabharata war and possibly even earlier. Manu said that the Kings have to consult Jyotishis. In Mahabharata also there is mention of Astrology. So according to me Astrology?was known to the Indians and the Indians did not import Astrology from the Greeks. I have nothing more to say. One can take it or leave it. ? Sincerely, ? Sunil K. I, therefore, request Dr. Sunil Bhattacharjya again to give the full address of the website wherefrom he is supposed to have downloaded the Vedanga Jyotisha by Acharya Lagadha, with the fifth mantra showing Mina rashi. 2. I also request Dr. Bhattacharjya to pl. inform as to how his parokshya knowledge about Indian Rashis, which he calls sidereal, in the Vedas can be correct but the parokshya knowledge of Dr. Wilkinson that it is only Tropical rashis in the Vedas can be wrong. 3. Thirdly, if the Chhandogya and Brihadarnyak Upanishadas say that Puranas are fifth Veda, does it not mean that Puranas existed prior to the Chhandogya and Brihadarnyaka Upanishada? And since both these Upanishadas are an integral part of the Vedas, it means that the Puranas existed even before the Vedas. 4. What is the actual position? 5. It appears, therefore, that Swami Dayananda Saraswati was right when he said that there are additions and alterations in quite a few Puranas and may be in some of the Vedic lore also. 6. And since Swami Dayananda Saraswati was a Vedic scholar with both paroksha and pratyaksha knowledge of all the shastras, including the Vedas, if he has advised not to fall in the trap of jyotishis, whom he calls Popejis, why should we not listen to his advice, even if most of us are non-Aryasamajis? Thanks in advance.
