Dear Sarbani, Sanjay ji et al,

Namaste

Firstly, we need to understand that gemstones produced on Earth from Bala asura’s body are enjoyed by pure persons due to the wealth of the collection of their religious merit (punya). Ref. Padma Purana Uttarakhanda Chapter 6 v.31 below.

With regards to a planet’s negative energy which cannot be “corrected” in the vargas by a gemstone! The above reference does not require delving into which is wrongly understood by some :-).

Chrysoberyl (Trigonal crystallisation akin to Sapphires) has the hardness of 8.5 and the refractive index is 1.744-1.755 with the absorption spectrum ranging from 4450 – 5040. Of course, the colour change is the one we know as Alexandrite (Orthorhombic crystallisation) . While the Cat’s Eye (orthorhombic) we recommend for Ketu comes from the same crystallization of the striation like in the vidula reed. Because of the fine parallel inclusions, the fine silver-white line (of the iris) effect is obtained not from faceting the gemstone, but in fashioning it into a cabochon. A good cabochon has a flat base. You’ll find that in order to compensate the straight iris effect of the cat’s eye, a cabochon can be fashioned rather deep/ovoid in shape which one should avoid. Description of the gemstone is described as Vaidurya which is always misrepresented as Lapis Lazuli! The testing of Vaidurya, Pushparaga etc were first expounded by Brahma and then repeated by Vyasa.

In the case of Peridot which Sanjay ji recommends for a debiltated Mercury??, the hardness of Peridot is much less with 6.5 – 7 on the moh’s scale and the refractive index is also less with 1.654 – 1.69 though the absorption spectrum is similar.

But the pertinent point one should bear in mind is not the hardness as we have been led to believe, but in the crystallisation of the gem or mineral. This is my understanding of the formation after reading in the Padma Purana about Bala asura’s destruction by Indra, who hoodwinked him.

That the bone particles that fell from Indra’s vajra turned into hexagonal shaped gemstones. This has been the biggest hint given!

We can finally categorize gemstones under their respective crystallisation and not of the hardness etc., which is just to differentiate them.

CRYSTALLISATIONS

Isometric

Almandine - Red Garnet (red with violet tint)

Cuprite - Cu2O with metallic lustre, very high refractive index. Transparent carmine red colour. (lots if fakes in the trade)

Demantoid - garnet group; andradite variety of emerald green or green colour

Diamond

Fluorite - also called fluospar, comes in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, nearly black and colourless

Garnet -

Gahnite - a zinc spinel, transparent with various intensities of blue, green and red-violet hue – a collector’s item

Gold

Grossular - garnet group; green, yellow, copper brown colours as in Hessonite (gomedha)

Lapis Lazuli - sometimes called lazurite; composed of several minerals – augite, calcite, diopside, mica, hauynite, hornblende and pyrite. Very sensitive to pressure

and high temperatures. Lazurite that is well distributed with pyrite is more preferred. Too much pyrite makes it dull looking with a greenish hue. Azurite

without the pyrite is known as azurite because of its azure blue colour. Without the pyrite etc, its crystallisation is monoclinic and not isometric.

**Leucite - transparent, colourless, white. A collectible by gem collectors. Because of its crystallization, I am inclined to think that this IS the

Bhismamani described in Garuda Purana? And NOT White Sapphire as originally thought of by myself, no less. Anyone????

Periclase - vitreous yellow; also a collector’s gemstone

Pyrite - we call this fool’s gold; the rather metallic look comes in brass yellow or grey yellow colours; it also comes in cubes besides the isometric crystals.

Pyrope - another type of garnet

Rhodolite - also another type of garnet

Silver

Sodalite - blue, grey colours mostly interspersed with white calcite. Non transparent and can be confused with lapis lazuli and mainly used for objets d’art

Spessartite - anopther type of garnet

Sphalerite - yellowish brown, orange, green and colourless; also known as zinc blende. Is rather brittle.

Spinel

Uvarovite - emerald green colour of the garnet family and can be confused with emerald.

Tetragonal - not interesting so will not list them here

Hexagonal (from Bala’s Bones – ref. Padma Purana and a excerpt below)

Apatite

Aquamarine

Beryl

Coral

Emerald

Goshenite

Heliodor - known to be radioactive and hence not recommended

Morganite - blush pink quartz

Malachite

Nephrite

Orthoclase

Others are of no interest

Triclinic

Ulexite is the most interesting and deserves a mention – it has an “eye”. When you pass the gemstone over a printed page, it magnifies the print – natures, eye lens.

Amorphous

Amber

Chrysocolla

Natural Glass/Obsidian

Ivory

Moldavite

Of pure birth and penances, all his limbs became the source of gems. His bone particles that fell from Indra’s vajra became hexagonal gems. From his eyes, dropped sapphires, ruby from his ears and his blood. Pearls came from his teeth, Emeralds came from his marrow and nose, corals from his tongue and flesh. Bell metal came from his excrement, silver from his semen, copper from his urine. Brass and lustrous wealth came from the unguent of his body. From his sound, vaidurya was produced and also delectable gems. Gold was produced from his gems and mercury (quick silver) came from his blood. Sphatika (crystals) came from his marrow.

Bala asura’s wife, Prabhaavatii turned into a river (the nadis) and united with parts of his body and flowed Eastward. Due to her waters, superfine gems with great brilliance were formed.

Does anyone want to volunteer on the excerpts from the Garuda Purana? The formation of gemstones are variable from different parts of his body.

love,

Swee

Dear Swee,

It was actually a 7 carat Pakistani peridot. The shape and size is very similar to the picture that you have shown. The colour is of course dark green.

Dear Swee

I got one for Sara just before our wedding. It really solves all Mercury related issues, tends to bring a lot of harmony and soothe nerves.

Best wishes and warm regards,

Jaya Jagannatha

Dear Anuj/Bharat,

Namaste

Can you tell me what your experiences with Green Chrysoberyl has been like? I am currently eyeing this one..... It does not have the chatoyancy as described by most (as we are lead to believe otherwise) but vaidurya in its better crystallised form instead of the reed/rope like inclusions that is present in a cat’s eye; which is typical of the nature of the gemstone.

I have a parivatana between the 11th and the 2nd so it would seem like Mercury conjoins Ketu in the 2nd and Jupiter switches camp and joins AL Sun in the 11th.

If you feel more comfortable writing to me privately, please do so as I would appreciate your inputs.

Love,

Swee
