Dear Lists,

Namaste

In my rather brief time out of town, some of the excerpts from Vishnu Dharmottara which were culled out by me, will hopefully clear your confusion.

Savitri said that the rewards obtained from meritorious deeds is the honour as a king. His chauries with sticks of gold are encrusted with green gems whose lustre is like the white rays of the Moon. Further to this is the reward of valuable gems (jewels) etc. that is in his possession.

In the narration of Mani Bandha Varnana in the Upakhyana addressed by Puskara to Rama Vishnu Dharmottara Khanda II Ch 110.78:

For the welfare of all mani (gems) which are delectable and auspicious and as prescribed in the Atharvaveda, adorning them will destroy all sins, remove perils and only increases prosperity. The wise should make a pregnant woman wear 7 (seven) gems obtained from the bamboo (bamboo pearl as described in Garuda Purana) and also those born from the sea (Pearl from the sea) if chanted with certain mantras, it destroys danger to the foetus or a disease called yakSma?? Anyone? Thanks.

In a dialogue between Markandeya and Vajra: The best of gems should be worn as their rays will burn the evils from the body of a man.

The statement above confirms that these delectable gems of the best quality together with the appropriate mantras is attractive enough for the deity to make their abode in them and hence protect the person from all ills.

Hope to find more later.

Love,

Swee

Dear Swee,

You have given very good references.

To add to what you have already said, Mani has many meanings and one of

them is Jewels. In Atharva Veda many types of Herbs are also referred

to as Mani.

Love,

Chandrashekhar.

Dear Chandrashekharji,

Namaste

Agree, but not when the mani in this case is mentioned as the bamboo pearl and the pearl from the sea. Usually, it is the “gems’mani” from plants. Vamana Purana also lists some plants/trees emanating from different deities. I have started writing this asrticle but have a lot more material to go through to ascertain the energies, if you know what I mean.

Dear Sarajit,

On second thoughts, would it be too much to ask you what type of TB this refers to?
