Guest guest
Namaste Swee Ji & all, With Swee Ji's permission I write what I know. In world markets, it is a safe presumption to say that most of Citrine AND Topaz has undergone some sort of enhancement. Generally heat treatment is done to Citrine to enhance its color or to convert off-color Brazilian amethyst into Citrine ( this is happening more and more since there is a lot of good color African Amethyst in the market). If the stone you are looking at has 0% inclusion/feather etc, then chances are it has been enhanced (primarily heated) . This method of enhancement is generally and widely accepted in the commercial trade of the gemstone although it is 100% unacceptable to use any of such stones for jyotish purposes. Other than this, Enhanced yellow color Clear Quartzs is also being mixed with proportions of real (heated) Citrine primarily in large calibrated lots coming out of China being bought by Thai and Indian companies. Now Topaz. Imperial or precious Topaz is, as Swee Ji pointed out, mined in Brazil only till date. It is primarily soft/dull yellow in color with a pinkish touch being highly desirable in the world markets. This too is always heated to get more pink in the stone. Besides the precious Topaz, ALL OTHER TOPAZ (shades of blue topaz, pink topaz, rainbow topaz, mystic topaz, green topaz etc etc) is heated OR film-coated. There is absolutely no reason to believe if someone says contrary cause there is NO SUCH THING as a real BLUE/YELLOW/PINK/GREEN ETC ETC NATURAL TOPAZ ! Enhancement is a general phenomenon in almost all varieties of Quartz and Topaz family in today's commercial world markets. So please be very careful in where you choose to buy your gemstones . For this reason, I believe it is best to buy from references of highly authentic and esteemed authorities like Swee Ji and Sanjay Ji. One simple way to separate a Quartz from a Topaz is to feel the weights in your hand. Topaz is significantly heavier than a Quartz of comparable size. In my experience, I have found both Topaz and Citrine to be heated as a matter of course. Topaz in its natural colour has a rather grey overtone, after treatment the yellow looks well enhanced, but in the matter of using it as a remedial measure, the effects is not good. Citrine: I have also found that Brazilian material can be heated from an Amethyst changing it to a Citrine! I am rather weary of such materials from there…………Because of the perfect cleavage of the Citrine, the heated material tends to shatter very easily. The Zambian material is all natural, but getting a yellowish one is rather on the rare side too. One word of caution: Someone recently gave a " Yellow Citrine " and when I checked it, it was actually colour treated Quartz, but not irradiated. I was also told it was also certified by an Indian seller to be the genuine material! Unless we are very sure whom we are dealing with, I'm afraid there are many cut throats in the market. My policy is to go to a renowned gemstone supplier and one who can supply a world recognized certificate (if you are spending a lot of money on the gemstone, it is worth paying the extra for the certification). On Imperial Topaz (you termed it as precious Topaz), I would akin this to an alternative for Hessonite for Rahu. Imperial Topaz is also heated as a matter of course! And is a product particular only to Brazil (as far as I know). Why not get spessartite instead? Of them, the exceptional one in mandarin colour is recommended (Sanjay ji calls this Goumuthra)?? The description of its colour from GP.I.77.2 is it is as brilliant like the colour of honey, collyrium, musk deer or fire and the plantain tree etc. Except for the initial statement on the size of a Diamond as 2.04 (correction) or the acceptable range from 1.224 -1.65 carats, let's bear this in mind that the rays given out by the diamond is +ve wavelength of 80,000 as compared to say 90,000 from the Corundum family. In this way, we can compare this to Citrine that exudes +ve wavelengths of 57,000 and prescribe accordingly to make up for the shortfall :-) but my preferences would go to the rather rare yellow Tourmaline (natural) as an Upa ratna. One thing I have been pondering over: That if such a fine Pearl is in your possession, the deity that is stationed in it will certainly bless you; free from all evils etc. (Ref. GP I.69.43) Maybe my sishya Gaurav Jain can contribute on this thread J.
