Dear François Carrière

The problem is with the dates. Brihat Samhita is not dated at 1300 BC so this is again an estimate made by Varahamihira of the ayanamsa. Of course there was a time when the Dakshina-ayana started form the middle of Aslesha. But the vexed question is when, and exactly on what date, because this has to be a date/year approximation at least.

With best wishes and warm regards,

Sanjay Rath

Hello everyone,I am soon beginning a course in vedic astrology at Dr D. Frawley's institute in USA. I browsed Dr Frawley's website and found a paper on the origin of the zodiac. In the paper, talking about a scholar, Pingree, he cites Varaha Mihira in his Brihat Samhita (III.1-2):«There was indeed a time when the Sun's southerly course (summer solstice) began from the middle of the Nakshatra Aslesha and the northerly one (winter solstice) from the beginning of the Nakshatra Dhanishta. For it has been stated so in ancient works. At present the southerly course of the Sun starts from the beginning of Cancer and the other from the initial point of the sign Capricorn.»Then Frawley adds that: «The middle of Aslesha is 23 20 Cancer, while the beginning of Dhanishta (Shravishta) is 23 20 Capricorn. Calculating the precession accordingly, this is obviously a date of around 1300 BCE.»I have reason to believe that this leads to a Raman related ayanamsha(perhaps J.N. Bhasin?). I tried other ones and they don't match. So, I would like to know if Professor Raman wrote on the subject of ayanamsha (which book title, then?) and if he explains the origin of his choice for an ayanamsha? Also, about this citation of Vahara Mihira, can we find a date for the correspondance of the solstices and the nakshatras cited by the author?--With my best regards,François Carrière
