Dear Sanjayji and list, Pranaam

I would be very grateful if you could clarify the calculation of Mandi

and Gulika. I have had an exchange with Vistiji about this, but I

would like to ask so that I (and hopefully others) are clear about

it:

In your translation of the Jaimini Sutras, you have given (page 316) a

table that gives the following result for Mandi:

- On a Saturday, where the day duration is 12 hours, Mandi rises 48

minutes after Sunrise. That means it would rise in the middle of

Saturn's Yama (which extends through the first 90 minutes after Sunrise

on a Saturday, for a 12 hour day). The same result is arrived at

for the other days of the week.

- And for Gulika, you write on page 37 that it rises at the end of

Saturn's portion.

What Vistiji told me, however, is this:

" Sanjayji taught me that

the upagrahas are children of the grahas. Because they are children, they

are born AFTER the graha itself rises. So Mandi cannot be born whilst

Saturn is rising, only after. The two sons of Saturn are Gulika and

Mandi. Gulika rises at the end of Saturns portion, or the begining of the

eighth portion, whilst Mandi rises in the middle of the eighth

portion. "

There seems, then, a contradiction regarding Mandi. Could you

kindly show me if I have misunderstood something about the calculation

given in your book?

Meanwhile, Sarvarth Chintamani (1.133-134) seems to say that Gulika rises

in the middle of Saturn's portion (in the 2nd ghati of a 30-ghati day on

Saturday), and I don't quite understand how it says to calculate

Mandi. And BPHS (3.66-70) seems to say that Gulika rises at the

beginning of Saturn's portion!

I would be very grateful for your guidance regarding how to calculate

these upagrahas.

Pranaam,

Samir
