Jaya Jaya Jagannath,

Namasthe Manpreet Singh Prabhu,

I am having a little question about the timing of marriage in your article, Sep. 1999 issue. I will be much thankful if you kindly clear this for me.

Marriage at a young age of 12 years is essentially a child marriage. Child marriages though are performed at a young age but the bride and groom generally start living together at a later age. Hence child marriage can be viewed as a commitment to marriage or as an engagement which involves marriage ceremony. Since the ceremony is involved, such an engagement must be linked to Upapada. From the age of 11 years and 8 months to 12 years and 4 months Guru Nanak Dev ji was running Narayana dasa of Capricorn and Antar dasa of Virgo. Virgo houses Jupiter, the lord of Upapada and aspects the Upapada itself. Hence it can give child marriage. At Guru ji’s age of 12 years 2 months Vimshottri Mahadasa of Rahu and antar dasa of Rahu stated. To give marriage the graha whose mahadasa is running must have argala on Navamsa Lagan. Rahu is placed in 3rd from Navamsa Lagan result in argala on lagan. (Malefics in 3rd result in argala - reference: Pt. Sanjay Rath’s translation of stanza 1.1.5 of Jamini Maharishi’s Upadesa Sutras).

My Q; In this chart, Navamsa is Leo and Rahu is in 5th. If Rahu is in 3rd there is no question. Rahu having unobstructed papa argala on Navamsa lagna in this case. Is there any mistake here or something else ?

Rahu itself is one of the lord of 7th house in Navamsa and hence can give marriage in its antar dasa. Since Upapada lord is Jupiter, Rahu would generally not give marriage but it can in this horoscope because Rahu is placed in Jupiter’s sign in Rasi chart.

Could you please clear the rule behind this ? Why when the UL lord is Jupiter, Rahu is not qualifying to give the marriage ?

Thank you.

Jai Jai Sri Jagannath !!!

Dear Karu,

I will leave the main part for Manpreet to answer to your queries. So far as your other part of the question is concerned:>Why when the UL lord is Jupiter, Rahu is not qualifying to give the marriage ?<

When we talk of Upapada we are talking about the purity or the dharma of the spouse. It is this dharma from which the blessings of the Kula (our forefathers) are obtained. Thus, the naisargika karaka for Upapada is Jupiter and not Venus although Venus is the Kalatrakaraka. As Rahu will represent adharma and will be opposed to Jupiter, its first action would be to damage the Upapada and it is well known that Rahu is terribly opposed to Jupiter. (In fact, one of the remedies suggested to save marriages or control troubles in marriages is wearing of Pushparaga or Pokhraj or Yellow Saphire). Thus, Rahu will not qualify to give marriage in the case of Jupiter becoming the lord of UL. However, there are exceptions/riders and they do work as demonstrated in the instant case. Sanjayji has explained all these in COVA very nicely.

With best wishes,

Sarat.
