Dear Yashomatinandana Prabhu,

I have seen the mail of Narasimha which explains things. The only addition, as we have been taught, is that 2nd here is the house of sustenance and any planet in that house will influence the disturbances that might affect the marriage - malefics in a greater manner and benefics in a lesser manner. The type of disturbances have been listed out in Sanjayji's book UPSJ - eg., Mercury can cause disturbance by way of learning etc., - the significations of Mercury. Rahu and Saturn inflict maximum damage because they are naturally opposed to Sun who is a benefic so far as the UL is concerned. Thus, although Sun is a malefic he will not break the marriage despite being placed in 2nd from UL for the reasons explained in the earlier post.

Therefore, to seek the blessings of the kula and the fruits thereof for a general good living, and warding off any marital problems fasting on the day of the Upapada Lagna is recommended with prayers to the Lord of the rasi in the 2nd from UL who is the sustainer of the UL. For eg., if somebody's UL were to be in Cancer, the person will fast on Mondays with a prayer to Lord Shiva who is represented by Surya who happens to be the lord of the 2nd from Karka.

I must concede though that there is much more to the Upapada Lagna than is visible to us as of now. More light on the matter could be shed by Sanjayji.

Thank you for your kind clarifications. Two more questions.

1. I am a little confused as Dinanath Prabhu writes that the 12th signifies those who follow us, whereas Sarat Prabhu likns that with our predecessors or lineage. Is this a contradiction?

2. Why is the 2nd from UL determines the durability of marriate? Is it because the 2nd house signifies it's sustainence or just because the 2nd is a maraka house &
