I have authored two books on Jyotish. The first is a translation of Maharishi Jaimini's Upadesa Sutra and the second is titled " Crux of Vedic Astrology- Timing of Events " which gives the various tools for timing events related to individual houses of the horoscope. Besides this, I have authored articles on astrology for many magazines, teach traditional Vedic Astrology at the Sri Jagannath Vedic Astrology Center at Delhi and meet people on weekends. My Guru 2. How and when did you start taking interest in Astrology? Who is your Guru? I belong to a traditional family of astrologers from Bira Balabhadrapur Village of Puri, Orissa. My grandfather, the late Pundit Jagannath Rath was the Jyotish Ratna of Orissa and had authored many books on Jyotish. He was known for his precise predictions and scientific approach. I was initiated (diksha) by my paternal uncle Late Pundit Kasinath Rath. the dasa-bhukti effects 3. How do you generally assess the Dasa-Bhukti effects? Any special theories? There are different ways to assess the impact of Dasa-Bhukti of different types of dasa depending on whether it is a Dasa of Graha (Planets) or Signs, its purpose i.e. Phalita or Ayur Dasa, its method of starting from the Moon position (Udu dasa like Vimsottari, Ashtottari, Kalachakra etc) or Lagna (various Rasi Dasa) or both (Su-Dasa) or other methods (like Drig Dasa from the ninth house or Panchaswara Dasa etc.) In a nutshell for Vimsottari Dasa, the lordship of the planet, its placement from Lagna, Paka Lagna, and Arudha Lagna as well as from other planets, houses, Arudha Pada & Varnada are to be considered. Its signification including Natural (Naisargika Karakatwa), Fixed (Sthira Karakatwa) and Temporal (Chara Karakatwa) are to be examined vis-à-vis the houses and Arudha Pada it signifies. Argala is of prime importance as it shows the way in which the planet influences all the other houses and other planets. This is to be properly used in the Rasi and all D-charts for a complete analysis of its influence. Transits especially the transit chart at the start of a particular Dasa-Bhukti should be drawn and examined as per the canons on this subject. Astakavarga, both SAV and Bhinnastakavarga play an important role in analyzing the strengths of the planets while the divisional charts hold the key to divination of the future. It is important to understand the effects of the planets. For example, the second lord in the sixth house will be five signs away from the second house and can give bad results pertaining to children, while it gives fortune (ninth counted from the second lord to the second house) and success in competitions. The dasa lord should be treated as temporary Lagna for understanding the placement effect of the Bhukti lord from it. This is as per the Satyacharya principle. This is a very broad subject and readers can refer to my book " Crux of Vedic Astrology- Timing of Events " . Divisional Charts 4. How far do the Divisional Charts help towards accuracy of prediction and what is the signification of different D-charts? Kalyan Verma (Saravali 3.12) expresses the importance of divisional charts. He opines that the divisional charts provide complete knowledge (enlightenment) on the bhava's, without which it is impossible to take even a step into this great science (of astrology). Thus, it is evident that the divisional charts hold the key to predictions and understanding the horoscopes. The birth of twins provides the greatest challenge to all astrologers. The general concept that the Rasi chart is the be all and end all of Jyotish takes a beating as the Birth Chart and sometimes even the navamsa charts of twins are invariably the same, yet their fortunes, looks etc are totally different. It becomes amply clear that there is yet another chart that is far more important than the Rasi & Navamsa Charts. This is the Shastyamsa Chart (D-60) as Parasara gives the highest weightage to this chart under the Vimsopaka Bala scheme (20-Point strength based on divisional dignities). We must respect the teachings of the Maharishi's, and then the knowledge will unfold. Every facet of life finds place in one of the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve houses of the horoscope. This results in the clubbing of many aspects in a particular house or sign thereby making the interpretation very subjective. Assigning natural lordships to planets over individual matters (Naisargika Karakatwa) supports this. For example, the fourth house rules over properties, mother, home, happiness, vehicles, formal education etc. While the examination of the Bhava may not be able to give a clear-cut picture and additional examination of the natural significator like Moon for mother, Venus for vehicles, Mars for properties, Ketu for home etc. will make the reading easier, but definitely not affirmative. This is where intuition steps in and the gifted astrologer is bailed out. If the invaluable tool of divisional chart were added, the reading would not only be accurate, but quite detailed. Since the twelve sign division is the primary division, it follows that all sub-division of the sign will fall in a sequence that repeats after every twelve divisions. Thus, for example, the D-16 Chart (Shodasamsa or Kalamsa) will be the first harmonic (or second cycle) of the D-4 Chart (Chaturthamsa). This can be expressed mathematically as 16 = (12 x 1)+ (4); where 1 represents the first harmonic. Similarly, the D-40 (Khavedamsa) Chart is the third harmonic (or 4th cycle) of the D-4 Chart as 40 = (12 x 3) + (4). The first cycle of divisional charts from Rasi chart (D-1) to Dwadasamsa (D-12) rules over the physical plane and covers such matters as physical body (D-1), material wealth (D-2), brothers & sisters (D-3), immovable properties (D-4), children (D-7), authority over others (D-5), spouse (D-9), work (D-10) and parents (D-12). The second cycle or first harmonic rules over the conscious plane. Technically it covers charts D-13 to D-24, but Parasara has restricted the scope to the three primary areas of mental activity namely Shodasamsa or Kalamsa (D-16) ruling over matters of general mental happiness, luxuries, vehicles etc; Vimsamsa (D-20) wherein spiritualism, occult studies etc are examined and Chaturvimsamsa (D-24) for all kinds of learning (which is actually considered a heritage from the society). The third cycle or second harmonic rules over the sub-conscious plane covering charts D-25 to D-36. Parasara advises us to focus on two charts in this group, namely, Nakshetramsa (D-27) for strengths & weaknesses and Trimsamsa (D-30) for all evils. For example if the Moon is exalted and placed in a quadrant in the D-27 Chart, we can infer that the native is mentally very strong. A weak Mercury in this chart can show speaking disorders or a weak speech. The fourth cycle or third harmonic rules over the super-conscious plane covering charts D-37 to D-48. However, the good & bad accruing to the destiny of the individual due to the Matrilineal karma (seen from Khavedamsa D-40 Chart as 40 = (12x3) + 4) and that from the Patrilineal Karma (seen from the Akshavedamsa D-45 Chart as 45 = (12x3) + 9) are considered important in the Shodasavarga scheme of Parasara. The fifth cycle or fourth harmonic rules the supra-conscious plane covering the charts D-49 to D-60. At this level, the heritage (equivalent of D-12) of the karma from past births is relevant and the Shastyamsa (D-60 Chart) is vital. Parasara gives the highest weightage to this chart in the Shodasavarga scheme. There are much higher planes of Consciousness and some other divisional charts like the Nava-Navamsa (D-81), Ashtorramsa or Navamsa-Dwadasamsa (D-108) and Dwadasamsa-Dwadasamsa (D-144) are used. Ashtakavarga 5. Many feel that only Astakavarga can be used to obtain definite (specific) predictions. This is a misnomer. All the tools of Vedic Astrology are equally important and each can be used for definite predictions. Health aspect 6. How is the health aspect seen through divisional charts and Ashtakarvarga? The first aspect of health is longevity. The Astakavarga Ayurdaya is not very reliable just like the other mathematical models. The best systems are the Method of three pairs, Method of three lords (of 1st, 8th & 10th) etc. This is to be supplemented with the position of the 8th Lord and some other rules. The divisional Charts, especially the Birth chart, Ekadasamsa or Rudramsa (D-11) and the Trimsamsa (D-30) are vital for judging the health of the native and in timing death. The Mandooka Dasa is to be used in the Ekadasamsa from the 11th house to determine the likely period of downfall, defeat and death. The 8th house shows the disease in Trimsamsa, 12th shows hospitalization etc. The Shoola Dasa is the best method of timing ill health and death. debilitation & retrogression 7. How did you assess the debilitated planets if they are also in retrogression? The retrograde planet acquires considerable rays as the outer planets are retrograde when away from the Sun, thereby acquiring its rays. This is called Chesta Bala. Thus, a retrograde planet indicates denial of its fruits for which a lot of additional effort will have to be made. If it were retrograde in the 11th house, then the desires and hopes will be smashed while retrogression in the seventh shows strange sexual appetites. If a natural benefic is retrograde & debilitated in a quadrant or trine indicates a curse from the past life. For example in a Chart with Virgo Lagna, Jupiter was retrograde, debilitated and vargottama in the 5th house Capricorn. Thus, the curse cannot be removed due to the vargottama position and the native became a schizophrenic patient when Jupiter dasa started. Conversely, natural malefic planets in a quadrant or trine, when retrograde and debilitated are a blessing from the past birth. The opposite occurs in dusthana. The second point is that a retrograde planet reverses its indications. Thus if a planet is retrograde in the 11th house, income and gains could be denied for legitimate work done. The planets in debility in the seventh from Arudha Lagna can destroy Rajyoga and when retrograde, this cannot be stopped easily. Maharishi Jaimini teaches " Tasmin Ucche neeche va Srimantaha " i.e. if a planet is exalted or debilitated, it will give good finances and wealth. All this will have to be considered before declaring results and both good and evil can occur simultaneously in different spheres of life. combust planets 8. Please comment on combust planets? I define combustion as the placement of a planet within the given orb for its combustion and also being placed behind the Sun. Combustion of Venus and Mercury cannot occur if they are in front of the Sun as their rays can reach the earth without obstruction. Thus, even if within the orb of combustion, Mercury (and all planets) in retrograde motion and Venus in direct motion (since the direction of rotation of Venus is the opposite as compared to other planets) are not combust. Unless this astronomical fact is borne in mind, the readings will be wrong. Some astrologers opine that Mars cannot be combust because of its name " Vakra " as used in the relevant sloka for exceptions. I have already explained the scientific facts behind this sloka and they are found to be quite true. In quite a few charts when Venus is quite close to the Sun, and is in direct motion, artistic talents have been seen. Budha-Aditya yoga becomes meaningless if Mercury is close to the Sun and retrogrades and then the combustion of Mercury occurs and all the creative energy of Mercury is wasted. remedial measures 9. Do you suggest remedial measures? Some examples please? Yes, I do suggest remedial measures after all, of what use is a doctor who can diagnose the disease, but cannot give medicine. Besides, the medicine for alleviating the effects of bad karma of the past should be Satwik (i.e. good karma). I give a typical case showing the traumatic experiences of a lady because of following the path of ignorance (Tamas). Example: Female born on 27 May 1967 at 5: 25 P.M IST at New Delhi (28N40; 77E13) Atmakaraka: Mercury; Arudha Lagna (AL): Aquarius; UPAPADA (UL): Capricorn; Mantrapada(A5): Aries; Bhagyapada(A9): Aries. In the Chart, the Upapada (UL) represents the spouse and the Lagna of her husband is Taurus (trines to her Upapada). The Arudha Lagna is in Aquarius and the Upapada is in the twelfth house from the Arudha Lagna showing that the native will tend to ignore or reject the spouse. The Mantrapada (A5) is in Aries conjoined Rahu and subject to a paapakartari[1] yoga between the Sun and Saturn. The Bhagyapada (A9) is also in Aries and the same situation obtains. During Rahu dasa Saturn Antardasa the native visited an uncle who is well versed in the Red or Black Kitab and was advised to visit a cremation ground during a particular night and bury some Tantrik articles. She was also gives some magical formulae (black magic mantra) to recite. All this was advised as she was passing through a difficult married life. The results were disastrous. The spouse was transferred to a remote locality and she ended up in a strange love affair with her boss. She contemplated divorce and even consulted lawyers. She had decided to forsake her children and spouse for marrying her boss. The boss, in turn sent his family away and decided to forsake his family, children and two other love affairs for her! At this juncture she called on the author with a common friend to determine the outcome of the love affair. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and will surely deliver her from sin. After she confirmed the above-mentioned incidents, she was categorically told to refrain from the evil practices. Since the prevalent Guna was largely Tamas, as per Vedic tradition it was necessary to rescue her from the clutches of the evil mantra and destroy Tamas by worshipping Sri Shiva or Sri Kali. Durga is a form of the divine Mother who destroys darkness and delivers one from sin. For this purpose, the 17 syllable Kalpavriksha Mantra[2] of Durga is most effective and she was asked to chant the mantra till the end of Rahu dasa Saturn antardasa. The fight against the evil and the emotional turmoil that she underwent is beyond description. With the advent of the antardasa of the Atmakarak Mercury the going became easy as although the AK tends to punish, it will always take the native on the divine path. She was asked to write the Beejakshara Mantra[3] of Sri Ganapati[4] and within a month of doing so, her spouse was transferred back to hometown. She developed the character and strength to ask her paramour to get out of her life and took up a job to augment family income. All's well that ends well. The tears and turmoil that the astrologer has to share for about a year and a half seem to be well compensated in the end as it reinforces faith in the Almighty. There maybe cases where the people who have visited the Tantrik or Black magician for consultation have got temporary relief, but there is no doubt that they have only deferred the debt of bad karma and will have to pay for the same with interest. Normally during the period of Rahu a native likes to learn about such occult practices and reads such books. unforgettable experience 10. Could you share with us any unforgettable experience you had (or heard!) which has astrological significance. When one is young and learning Jyotish, then some mistakes happen due to excessive enthusiasm and not heeding the words of the Guru. I had just started learning the secrets of timing death in 1989 when my good friend Simanta asked me to examine the chart of the sister of his fiancé and comment on her health. On examining the chart, I remarked that if she was traveling in a hilly area, then there was danger to her health. On further inquiry, he was told that if her mother went there immediately, then she would be safe as she was in her third Shoola dasa (18-27 years) and Venus was in the 4th house for Pisces ascendant. The evil occurred and I was informed about her accident and sudden death in the foothills of the Himalayas where she had gone for a trek and the brakes of a truck failed as it rolled on her. I learnt a very harsh lesson in Jyotish that this knowledge is meant to do good and where we cannot do so, then making predictions for some temporary fame is useless and unethical. OM TAT SAT -- [1] Sandwiched between; Paapa means bad or sinful. [2] Kalpavriksha is the celestial tree that grants any boon. In the Human body, it is the Kundalini Shakti in the spinal chord. The roots of the Celestial tree are in the Mooladhara Chakra in the base of the spine and its branches and leaves with fruits in the Sahasrara Chakra in the brain. The Kalpavriksha mantra is " OM HRIM SRIM KRIM DURGATINASINYAI MAHAMAYAYAI SVAHA " . ! h`IM EaIM k`IM dUga-itnaaSaInyaO maahamaayaayaO svaaha . [3] The Beejakshara of Sri Ganapati is " GAM' and the mantra is " OM HRIM GAM HRIM MAHAGANAPATAYE NAMAH SVAHA " . ! h`IM gaM h`IM maahagaNaptyao nama: svaaha . [4] Sri Ganapati is the elephant headed son of Sri Shiva. Belonging to the divine family that delivers the soul from darkness and sin, the specific function of Sri Ganapati is to teach and drive away ignorance (avidya). He is represented by Ketu the significator of emancipation from all kinds of bondage including rebirth.
