Namaste friends,

If Jupiter is placed in the 8th from Moon, we say that he is badly placed

from Moon. If Jupiter is placed in the 11th from lagna, we say that Jupiter

is well-placed w.r.t. lagna.

But lagna and Moon are not the only possible reference points in a chart.

Lagna and all the seven planets (Rahu & Ketu not included) can be used

as references. Astakavarga is a method of judging the placement of a planet

with respect to all these 8 reference points (ashta = eight, varga = group).

The number of benefic bindus (dots) in a planet's ashtakavarga in a sign

shows with respect to how many planets it is well-placed in that sign.

Though many people think that this is applicable only to rasi chart,

Parasara never said that. He gave a list of various charts at the beginning

of his classic BPHS - rasi chart being one of them - and listed the matters

to be seen in various charts. What he said in the rest of the book is not

specific to rasi chart and applies to various charts as and where appropriate.

If you analyze whether or not a planet is well-placed w.r.t. lagna in

a divisional chart, there is no reason for omiting other reference points!

You may as well measure the strength from other 7 reference points.

Sometime back, Brendan and Zoran analyzed why Saturn dasa was good for

my education. By an age of 11, I had two bachelor's degrees in Sanskrit

literature and one in Hindi a year later. I was state first in my state

with a record score in higher secondary school exams and studied at India's

top engineering institute. All this happened in Saturn dasa.

Several reasons were given by Brendan, Zoran and me and the following

is certainly an important reason for academic success in Saturn dasa:

The following is the ashtakavarga of my D-24 (D-24 is the chart of education

as per Parasara):

Ar Ta Ge Cn Le Vi Li Sc Sg Cp Aq

Pi

Sun 3 4 4 4 8 4

0 6* 3 3 4 5

Moon 5 3 6* 2 5 3 5

3 5 5 3 4

Mars 4 2* 3 1 7 2 0

4 4 3 4 5

Merc 5 3 5 4 4 6

4* 4 3 4 5 7

Jupi 3 3 6 6 3 3

6 5 7 4 5 5*

Venu 5 3 6 4 4 4

7 3 4 4 4* 4

Satu 3 2 4 4 5* 4 2

3 3 3 3 3

Total 28 20 34 25 36 26 24 28 29 26 28 33

Saturn is in Leo. He has 5 bindus and that is pretty strong for Saturn.

Moreover, the sign he is in (Leo) has 36 bindus in SAV (see "Total" above).

That is extremely strong. Anything above 30 is strong.

For these reasons, Saturn is a strong planet in D-24. Moreover, he owns

arudha lagna and ghati lagna. Being a very strong planet associated with

AL and GL, he gave success in education.

BTW, SAV should have a lot of bindus in the sign containing lagna or

lagna lord for a chart to become very strong. Here lagna is in Ge and it

has 34 benefic bindus in SAV. That is strong again. This shows that the

chart has inherent strength.

Chief Minister of AP state in India, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, has the

following birthdata:

Date of Birth: April

20, 1950

Time of Birth:

11:30:00 am

Time Zone of Birth: 5:30 East of GMT

Longitude of Birth: 79 E 25

Latitude of Birth: 13 N 39

In Jupiter dasa, he rose to great heights in career. In rasi, Jupiter

is in a sign with 29 bindus (25-29: fair) and he has 4 bindus ("fair" for

Jupiter).

Dasamsa (D-10) is the chart for career. In D-10 ashtakavarga of Naidu,

Jupiter is in a sign with 31 bindus (good) and he has 7 bindus (extremely

powerful). Jupiter is lagna and 10th lord and he is extremely extremely

well-placed. This is why Jupiter dasa is good. Again, lagna and arudha

lagna with 30 bindus in SAV suggest inherent strength of the chart and

show a successful career.

As these two examples may show, ashtakavarga is an important tool in

deciding how well-placed a planet is in a chart and it is applicable to

all divisional charts.

In the free software "Jagannatha Hora Lite" from SJVC, I included ashtakavarga

(of all divisional charts!) and you can benefit by using it.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha
