I guess it's OK. To each his own. I wasn't taught this ashtamsa by my father. However, what you said is correct. Overall, I did not have much clash between the teachings of my three gurus. The only main clashes in the teachings are: (1) My father taught me that each rasi is a house. If lagna is at 1 deg in Li and Jupiter is at 29 deg in Vi, he still considers Jupiter to be in 12th. My father told me that this is very very basic. He said that there is no ambiguity in the teachings of maharshis in this matter and he told me ignore later day additions like Sripathi house division etc. Dr. Raman's stand on this is tough to gather from his books, but he seemed to go with Sripathi's house division method. Though my father respects Dr. Raman, he told me very confidently that each rasi is a house. Later, your teachings also matched my father's on this one. (2) My father is thoughly convinced about savana years. In aharganas, varsha, masa and vara balas of shadbalas, we take years of 360 days (360 normal days). My father thinks that the same year should be used in Vimsottari dasa. Those who argue that " 360 days " has no astro-significance will do well to note that 1 year = 360 normal days (where a new day starts at a new sunrise) in calculating varsha bala ( " year strength " ) of shadbalas. Savana years are not without a strong astro-basis. Now, the teachings of my third Guru - you - suggest 365.2425 day years. I decided to go with my father's teachings. (3) In prasna (horary), you suggest casting a chart for the moment when the astrologer answers the question. My father taught me to cast the chart for the moment when the queror formed the question in mind. I intend to give a couple of examples for this approach today or tomorrow. But for a few differences like these, the teachings of my 3 Gurus do not clash. The good thing is that all my teachers are flexible and do not take offense if I question them or take a different stand.
