Om Jaya Jaya Jagannatha Namamyaham

Dear Sarajit,

In the fine book on Todal Tantra, the author after finishing this

voluminous classic writes that " among all the tantra, the highest is the

Jagannatha Tantra in Udra Desa (presently Orissa) " . We should understand the

real import of these words that we use. " TRAI " means to protect by control

or directing. Now, we know that a human being is made up of three parts of

Mind (MOON/AmK), Body (LAGNA/LORD) and Soul (SUN/AK). Thus, we worship to

try to protect by controlling and directing these three parts of the self

towards Godhead.

When Srila Prabhupada said " Back to Godhead " or Dayanand Saraswati said

" Back to the Veda " or Ramakrishna said " Back to your Mother " , they meant one

and the same thing, but were working at different parts of the self. Here,

Srila Prabhupada wanted that the Mind (which is the most important

constituent of the mortal self) to be quickly prepared for the journey and

strongly preached the " TRAI " of the MANA (Mind) by spreading the MAHAMANTRA.

When Dayanand Saraswati said " Back to the Veda " he wanted the " TRAI " of the

ATMA (Soul) and stronly advocated for the Gayatri Mantra and the reading of

the Veda's that will enlighten the soul. When Ramakrishna Paramhamsa said

" Back to your Mother " he actually wanted " TRAI " of TANA (this body) which is

the repository of the mind and the soul and preached Bhakti or love for the

Mother who has created you and hence the path was called TANTRA. Thus, it is

evident that at these HIGH IDEALISTIC level, these Guru's were all perfectly

correct. But how many of us can hope to remain or achieve these levels?

Talking of Tantra, I give a very fine example from the life of

Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. When he was practising the Bhakti of Sri Krishna,

then he was teaching that the best path is to 'become like Radha' and

Krishna would surely come. So strong and powerful was his TANTRA that his

body gradually transformed like that of a female, he developed breasts! and

it is said that he even had menstrual periods!! That is the real tantra.

Now, do a search in any aearch engine for Tantra sites and see for

yourself how this has fallen to the depts of utter trash where vulgar

sexuality is being traded for tantra!! I even got an invitation a few days

back to join a tantric celebration and meet my surprize bride!! This was

very insulting as the sender should have been aware of the fact that I am

married. I just shrugged and destroyed the mail with the remark...YET

ANOTHER ONE IN MERC-MERC-RAHU!!.

Coming back to tantra, the use of a simple Gemstone like Pokhraj in the

finger to ward off the negative effects of Graha's is ALSO TANTRA as we are

protecting ourselves through a physical medium of the stone. Similarly,

consumption of the right medicine is also Tantra as we are protecting the

body through the physical medium of the medicine.

Dear Sarajit!

 

I think gurudeva will give His reply, let me just add a few explanatory

notes:

 

Shri Krishna explains in the bhagavad-Gita that there are different ways of

worship under the different modes of nature. Those who are in Sattwa Guna,

wotrhsip Lord Vishnu or Krishna or Their avatars. Those who are in passion,

worship the demigods (Indra, Surya, Shiva etc.) and those who are in

ignorance

worship ghosts. So as Dirga is the goddes of the msatreial energy, she

represents all the three Gunas. But the pure Sattwic form of Her is

Lakshmidevi, the consort of Shri Vishnu. The forms like Chamunda or Mahakali

etc. are more Tamasik forms so as for Lord Shiva. The Sattwic persons

worship

Him as Vaishnavanam Yatha (the greatest devotee of Lord Krishna), as

Gopesvara

Mahadeva or Sadaashiva or Adwaita Acharya.

The Tamasic form is Kaalabhairava or BhuUtervara etc. Because he is also the

lord of thise who are in Tamas, like the ghosts, the pretas (dead souls)

etc.

 

In this way you must understand that there are different forms of Tantra:

Vaishnava Tantra, which is Sattwic, and Shaiva or Shakta Tantra, which can

be

of either modes depending on the method and motivation of worship. If you do

it for material gains then it will be either Rajasik or Tamasik, and if you

do

it for enlightenment, it may be even Sattwic in some cases.
