Dear Tapani,

They used a stick (even till recent times) called CHAYANGULA to measure

the length of the shadow etc. The stick was very straight and was hollow

inside and by gazing at the peak of mountains through it, they could measure

the height (angles and distance). This must have been the basis for Latitude

& Longitude as well using the stick to look at fixed pole star etc.
