Sanjay walks a free man, at least for a few days; says he's happy

Early morning release from prison helps avoid fans

A good three days after Supreme Court granted him interim bail, actor Sanjay

Dutt was released from the Yerawada Central Prison on Thursday morning. Dutt,

clad in a

striped white shirt and black jeans, sporting a beard and a new crew cut, walked

out from the main gate of Yerawada jail at 7.15 am. His lawyer Satish

Maneshinde, who

had reached the prison at 6.15 am to complete formalities for his release, was

the first to come out of the prison gates first, followed by Yusuf Nullwala and

then Dutt.

 

As soon as Dutt was out, carrying a plastic bag containing his personal items,

he shook hands with a number of jail and police personnel and hugged a few

before getting

whisked away in a white coloured LCV parked outside. A team of policemen led by

Yerawada police inspector Prasad Hasabnis prevented mediapersons from talking to

Dutt outside the jail. The police were spared the tedium of handling the big

fan gathering that had staked out the premises till late night on Wednesday as

not many were

present outside the prison gates early in the morning.

 

Dutt, who had to spend three extra nights in jail despite the Supreme Court

granting him interim bail on Monday, will have to surrender in less than a

week's time before

the special TADA court in Mumbai. The court has fixed August 27 as the date for

him to be given the judgement copy.

Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) SC Mathur told mediapersons

: " Dutt was not given any special treatment by the jail authorities. Dutt's

behaviour was excellent during

 

his stay in the jail. He has been paid the wages he earned in the cane work

division at the rate of Rs 20 for each of his working days, " Mathur said.

 

The vehicle carrying Dutt to the Lohegaon airport was chased by media persons

till airport entrance where the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

personnel stopped

them. Dutt who was mobbed by the media did not talk to them despite repeated

requests.The CISF men threw a protective ring around him and led him to the

restricted

area of the airport from where he directly boarded a chartered plane to Mumbai.

He was accompanied by his brother-in-law Kumar Gaurav, among others
