A military transport plane carrying 40 people has

crashed in the east Chinese province of Anhui with the reported loss of at

least five lives.

The state news agency said that a rescue mission was under way

while local sources reported human remains strewn across a mountainside.

Villagers rushed to the scene after hearing an explosion, a

local man told the Associated Press by telephone.

The plane's body hit bamboo

forest and its tail fell in fields, he said.

The witness, named only as Tang, said he personally had seen two

bodies before the area was cordoned off.

An unnamed official at the Anhui provincial

government office told AP the accident had happened around 1600 (0800 GMT) on Saturday near Yaocun, a village in Anhui's eastern

Guangde county.

Five bodies were found, he said.

Guangde, about 200km (125 miles) south-west of Shanghai, is known for

mountain villages where bamboo furniture is produced.

Details of the type of plane and its flight path were not

immediately given.
