Secretary General Kofi Annan said. Stephane Dujarric said that Annan had dispatched Ian Martin -- formerly a U.N. special envoy to East Timor but currently head of the U.N. human rights mission in Nepal -- back to Dili " to assess the situation firsthand. " The U.N. Security Council may adopt a statement urging the East Timor government to take all necessary steps to end the violence and calling on all parties to stop fighting. The council is awaiting China's response to the statement before bringing it to a vote. An attack on the national police headquarters Thursday lasted for an hour, Dujarric said, before U.N. police and military advisers negotiated a cease-fire that required the police to leave their headquarters unarmed. " As the unarmed police were being escorted out, " renegade army soldiers opened fire on them, " he said, resulting in the nine dead and 27 wounded. The latest unrest in one of the world's newest countries began in March when the government fired 600 soldiers who had gone on strike against alleged discrimination in the military. It has prompted President Xanana Gusmao to request international peacekeeping troops, some of whom arrived Thursday. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/05/25/timor/index.html Dasha: Ra/Ve/Ju/Su/Ju satva Jorge Angelino Rua da Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense, 29 2925-598 Azeitão Portugal jorge.angelino tel: mobile: 210813674 963916784 Add me to your address book...
