19, 1803, the U.S. Congress approved the

constitution and admitted Ohio as the 17th state.

The first session

(meeting) of the Ohio House occurred in Chillicothe on March 3, 1803.

http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/house.cfm

1803: President

a bill making Ohio a state retroactive to 1803.)

March 1: The

first Ohio General Assembly meets in Chillicothe on what becomes the officially recognized date of statehood.

Congress accepted

the constitution and approved statehood; on February 19, 1803, President Jefferson signed the

bill into law. It provided that Ohio " had become one of the United States

of America, " and that Federal law " shall have the same force and

effect within the said State of Ohio, as elsewhere within the United

States. "

estimated at 104,000 square kilometers.

Several towns in

southeastern Ohio experienced moderate damage on November 5, 1926.

A brief but

strong shock was felt over a wide area in western Ohio on September

(September 20, 1931), another damaging earthquake occurred in the same area.

On March

2, 1937, much additional damage occurred

at Anna.

The next day,

March 3, at 3:50 a.m., a moderate earthquake (intensity V) shook the same area. It

awakened many persons, rattled windows, and shook some bricks from chimneys.

The strongest

tremor of this series occurred at 11:45

p.m., March 8, 1937.

On March

9, 1943, an earthquake centered east of Cleveland, was felt over a 100,000 square

kilometer area, but only caused minor damage at points nearest the epicenter.

On June

20, 1952, an early morning (3:38

a.m.) tremor awoke most of the people in the Zanesville area.

Re: Re: OHIO chart

A Speculation:

The Congressional Staff

who did the " foot work " in preparing the 1953 legislation confused

March 1st, the date the bill passed the House (and where the bill

originated) with the date of Completion, which is the date of

enactment, by the President's signature of March 3rd.

SUBJECT: March 3,1803 not March 1, 1803

1953: August 7th: It all started in 1953 when Ohio was preparing to

celebrate the 150th anniversary of its admission to the Union.

Researchers looking for the original statehood documents discovered

there'd been a little oversight. While Congress had approved Ohio's

boundaries and constitution, the State retained no official record of

notification to the State of Ohio authorities. Many " Buckeyes " feared

that technically, therefore, Ohio was not a duly admitted State.

Ohio congressman George Bender wanted to remedy this embarrassment

and so introduced a bill in Congress to " finalize " the admittance of

Ohio to the Union, retroactive to the relevant Act in 1803. They

chose " March 1 " , 1803. At a special session at the old state capital

in Chillicothe the Ohio state legislature approved a new petition for

statehood that was delivered to Washington on horseback [ " I'm not

making this up " ]. Congress subsequently passed a joint resolution,

and President Eisenhower signed it on August 7, 1953. Trouble is they

chose the wrong date, wrong by 2 days. In 1803 President Jefferson

had signed the act of admittance on March the 3rd, not March the

1st.

1803: March 03rd: Ohio becomes the Seventeenth State to join the

Federal Government. On this day, in the afternoon, President Thomas

Jefferson did approve and sign " An act in addition to, and in

modification of, the propositions contained in the act, entitled 'An

act to enable the People of the Eastern division of the Territory

Northwest of the river Ohio, to form a Constitution and State

Government, and for the admission of such State into the Union, on an

equal footing with the original States; and for other purposes; "

1802:

November 29th: A convention at Chillicothe, Nov. 1-29,

formed

and adopted the State of Ohio's first constitution, which went into

legal force without submission to popular vote.

1802, April 30th: Federal enabling act signed by President Jefferson

this day; pursuant to the Northwest Ordinance of July 13,1787 and the

Ohio Act of Petition of December 21, 1801. Ohio is henceforth

recognized as a territorial State in the process of forming a

constitution and government.

1801, December 21st: An act declaring the assent of the Territory

Northwest of the river Ohio to an alteration in the ordinance for the

government thereof is voted this day; Ohio as a State empowered by

this " original compact " is born of this event.

Journal of the House of Representatives of the United States, 1801-

1804

THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1803--SIX O'CLOCK, P. M.

A message was received from the President of the United States, by

Mr. Lewis, his Secretary, notifying that the President did approve

and sign, this day, an act, which originated in this House, entitled:

" An act in addition to, and in modification of, the propositions

contained in the act, entitled 'An act to enable the People of the

Eastern division of the Territory Northwest of the river Ohio, to

form a Constitution and State Government, and for the admission of

such State into the Union, on an equal footing with the original

States; and for other purposes. "

Statute I.

Act of August 7, 1789, ch. 8.

Act of May 8, 1792, ch. 42.

The inhabitants of the eastern division of the territory west of the

Ohio to form a constitution and become a state.

Act of March 3, 1803, ch. 21.
